Greetings, Hive! When thinking about our greatest achievements in videogames surely the first thing we think of is to fulfill certain conditions or challenges that are not an easy task; such as winning a competitive tournament, finishing a game at its highest difficulty, completing a side mission that seemed impossible, etc. In my case I could talk about how I 100% completed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, about how I finished all God of War and Devil May Cry games on maximum difficulty, about the several platinum trophies I got when I had my PlayStation 3. However, I think my greatest achievements in the gaming world have not been in video games but through videogames, and these achievements are: learning a new language, and discovering my passion for music.
So without any further ado, let's start!
I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, so logically my native language is Spanish. By the time I started playing videogames (around 1998 - 99) they weren’t yet translated into Spanish in Latin America, so my only option was to play them in English. This could mean an incredible challenge for a 6 - 7 year old kid who was just starting to speak properly his native language, but it was never a limitation for me to enjoy videogames, on the contrary, this awakened my interest in learning English in order to be able to understand the plot of the videogames I played, so the solution was simple: playing with a dictionary.
Like most of the games I played were rpgs, I had the opportunity to read calmly between the dialogues with my dictionary and although many times it was difficult to understand the whole conversation (because there were idiomatic expressions that didn’t appear in the dictionary and couldn’t be translated literally) it was enough to understand the general context of the situation, as well as to know what was next thing to do. In this way I gradually became familiar with the language from a very young age, by the time I was a teenager my level of English was much more advanced than average, and today I’m studying and about to graduate in English as a second language in one of the best institutes in Venezuela. I know it may seem silly, and my English isn’t the best one around there, for me it’s a great achievement and obviously I attribute it and thank videogames for having awakened that interest in me.

The second great achievement that I got through video games was to discover passion for music, and eventually, to choose what to dedicate my life to. It all started when I played Ocarina of Time, we all know that Link played the Ocarina of Time, and I wanted to be a hero like Link and I wanted to play an ocarina too, besides this I was very interested in the soundtrack of the game because it was a type of music that I had never heard before.
My mom enrolled me in a music school that was near her work and when they asked me what instrument I wanted to play my answer was immediate: the ocarina. They laughed, because the ocarina is not a symphonic instrument and they didn't even teach it at that school, so I went with what I saw as the closest thing to an ocarina, the flute. I tried the flute for a while but I didn't like it, until one day I was recommended to try the tuba, and here I am after almost 14 years. I liked music so much that I decided that I would dedicate myself to it, and even though it has been a journey with many ups and downs, I’m happy that I chose it as my career, and all thanks to videogames.

One of my biggest dreams in life is to play in a video game music concert, although I think most of the time I would be more crying than playing hahahaha.
I think the most significant thing about the achievements in videogames is what remains of them in the process, they teach us to be perseverant and not to give up what we want. I could talk about countless achievements I have had in videogames, but for me the most important and most significant thing is all the good things that videogames have left me to grow as a person. Without video games I wouldn’t be nearly the person I am today, I am happy and grateful for all the beautiful experiences I've had in it and through the world of gaming.

¡Saludos, Hive! Al pensar en los más grandes logros que he conseguido en los videojuegos seguramente lo primero que pensamos es en cumplir ciertas condiciones o desafíos que no son tarea fácil; como por ejemplo ganar un torneo competitivo, terminar algún juego en su máxima dificultad, completar alguna misión secundaria que parecía imposible, etc. En mi caso podría hablar de cómo completé al 100% The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, de cómo terminé todos los God of War y los Devil May Cry en su máxima dificultad, y de varios trofeos de platino que obtuve cuándo tenía mi PlayStation 3. Sin embargo, creo que mis mayores logros en el mundo gaming no han sido en los videojuegos si no a través de los videojuegos, y estos logros son: aprender un nuevo idioma, y descubrir mi pasión por la música.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!
Soy oriundo de Caracas, Venezuela, por lo que lógicamente mi idioma natal es el español. Para el momento en el que comencé a jugar videojuegos (alrededor de 1998 – 99) estos aún no llegaban a Latinoamérica traducidos al español, así que mi única opción era jugarlos en inglés. Esto pudo suponer un reto increíble para un niño de 6 – 7 años que apenas comenzaba a hablar bien un idioma, pero nunca fue una limitante para disfrutar los videojuegos, por el contrario, esto despertó mi interés en aprender en inglés para poder entender la trama de los videojuegos que jugaba, así que lo que hice fue sencillo: jugar con un diccionario.
Como la mayoría de juegos que jugaba eran rpg, tenía la oportunidad de leer calmadamente entre los diálogos con mi diccionario y si bien muchas veces me costaba entender toda la conversación (porque habían expresiones idiomáticas que no aparecían en el diccionario y no se podían traducir literalmente) era suficiente para entender el contexto general de la situación, así como también saber cuáles eran mis próximos objetivos a cumplir. De esta manera fui familiarizándome poco a poco con el idioma desde muy temprana edad, para cuándo era un adolescente mi nivel de inglés era mucho más avanzado que el promedio, y hoy por hoy estoy a estudiando y a punto de graduarme de inglés como segundo idioma en uno de los mejores institutos de Venezuela. Sé que puede parecer tonto y que además mi inglés no es el mejor, pero para mí es un gran logro y obviamente se lo atribuyo y agradezco a los videojuegos por haber despertado ese interés en mí.
Mi primer diccionario de Español/Inglés
El segundo gran logro que conseguí a través de los videojuegos fue descubrir la pasión de la música, y, posteriormente, elegir a que dedicar mi vida. Todo comenzó cuándo jugué Ocarina of Time, todos sabemos que Link tocaba la Ocarina del Tiempo, y pues yo quería ser un héroe al igual que Link y quería tocar una ocarina también, aparte de esto me llamaba mucho la atención el soundtrack del juego ya que era un tipo de música que nunca había escuchado.
Mi mamá me inscribió en una escuela de música que estaba cerca de su trabajo y cuándo me preguntaron qué instrumento quería tocar mi respuesta fue inmediata: la ocarina. Ellos se rieron, porque la ocarina no es un instrumento sinfónico y ni siquiera lo enseñaban en esa escuela, así que me decanté por lo que vi más parecido a una ocarina, la flauta. Probé la flauta por un tiempo pero no me gustó, hasta que un día me recomendaron probar la tuba, y aquí estoy con ella después de casi 14 años. La música me gustó tanto que decidí que me dedicaría a ella, y a pesar de que ha sido un viaje con muchos altos y bajos, estoy feliz de haberla elegido como mi carrera, y todo gracias a los videojuegos.

Uno de mis mayores sueños en la vida es tocar en un concierto de música de videojuegos, aunque creo que la mayor parte del tiempo estaría más llorando que tocando jajajaja.
Creo que lo más significativo de los logros en los videojuegos es lo que nos queda de ellos en el proceso, nos enseñan a ser perseverantes y a no renunciar a lo que queremos. Podría hablar de un sinfín de logros que he tenido en los videojuegos, pero para mí lo más importante y lo más significativo es toda las cosas buenas que me han dejado los videojuegos para crecer como ser humano. Sin los videojuegos no sería ni de cerca la persona que soy hoy en día, estoy feliz y agradecido de todas las bonitas experiencias que he tenido en él y a través del mundo del gaming.
I know I got a little sidetracked talking about my achievements in video games, but I find this world so wonderful that it allows us to approach a situation from many perspectives. What about you? What has been your greatest achievement in gaming or due to gaming?
