We Prepared a Handmade Battlefield For Our Dungeons and Dragons Tabletop Game
I haven't had a chance to write in the last week, but there is a very-very good reason for that. The big moment we have been preparing for for the last week has arrived and we played the finale of our Dungeons and Dragons game!
You can see the construction of the arena we prepared for this finale behind the pictures of some of the posts I shared with you last week, but this week we focused all our attention on it and finished it. Keep reading to invite you to join us on our adventure with lots of pictures!
Really LOTS and LOTS of pictures
Cutting and Drawing Stage!
The whole thing started by buying XPS foam (Styrofoam) and PVA glue. Then we cut them the way we wanted. This arena needed to be big so four Styrofoams were used.
Then we marked mini-sized squares inside the circles where the heroes would fit. The purpose of these squares is to measure the distance traveled. We also used aluminum foil at this stage to create the effect of stones and dents.
Where these stones and dents did not satisfy us, or where they felt more aesthetically pleasing, we enlarged and deepened the scratches with a pen.
Then we used a cutting machine to make the columns and cut some stones whole and some stones individually. Obviously it is easier to cut them one on top of the other. But it's more fun to cut the stones one by one and stack them like a real civil engineer, or let's say like a Dwarf Stonemason, because it is cooler.
The elevations for the sides had to be cut separately. At the same time, it was nicer to cut the stairs individually by hand.
I must say frankly that I am an honest and hardworking person and it took me **a full day** to pull and cut the lines outside. I couldn't draw the lines in one go because I don't have a long ruler and you have to press hard with a pencil to deepen them. With the piece of wood you see on the table, it took me a really long time to both cut straight and draw straight. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT.
Painting Stage
At this stage we took a lot of black, water, drop of soup and thick acrylic paint, mixed it in a big bowl and painted it with one of your biggest brushes. It was quick, but drying was like an ETERNAL WAIT.
First, we use spray varnish to hold the paint and prevent it from fading.
After that, we throw high-lights with gray acrylic paint. So that there is not just a black area. We use a big brush again and the paint should not be too much. We need to touch it and then dry it on the empty side of the pallet. If you do it with a brush that's too wet and too much paint, you have to paint it black again, because only the grooves and the holes that we made in the beginning are supposed to hold them. Do you remember where we pressed them down with aluminum foil?
It is a good decision to make some places more light-colored to give the feeling of being lived in and repeatedly being walked.
Afterwards, we place our painted decorations and the attachments we have prepared to color our battlefield.
Since the last creature we will fight is dragon, or even the Dragon Queen herself, we decided to add color effects to match her breath attacks, because right now the battlefield felt very colorless. It needed something more.
And Final Images from Game Day !!!
