This is a review of a game "Helldivers". Helldivers is a top-down shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. In Helldivers, you assume control of a soldier fighting for the rulers of super-earth. A planet where the brainwashed population fight for the cause without really knowing what it is. You're tasked with the eradication of three alien species by the super-earth leaders. So, you have to go to these alien planets kill the aliens steal technology all in the name of freedom and liberty. The game has a solo mode, local co-op mode, and an online multiplayer mode with up to three other players.
What is the game like to play
Well, the game is all about teamwork, coordination, and working collaboratively with your squad. You have to complete set objectives on each level get to the extraction point and hold out until your ship arrives. The game is a little bit too challenging for solo players so if you want to make any real progress here you need to team up with other people. The game uses a twin-stick control system with one stick for movement and one for aiming. To call in airdrops or complete mission objectives you need to enter a code which is basically a combination of d-pad directions.
You can customize your character's visuals but they don't have any effect on your abilities. The weapons on the other hand can be augmented and upgraded as you progress. Upgrade points come via locating samples on alien worlds you can also unlock and upgrade your support items which can be air-dropped in mid-mission if you type in the d-pad combination correctly.
These special supplies are real game changers you've got razor-wire, deadly turrets that will shoot any hostiles in the vicinity, you can replenish your ammo supplies or you can call it a tank or a mech or just request that dead teammates be revived. But one thing you need to know is this game features friendly fire and you will get hit either by teammates or turrets or if you're a particularly unlucky person a Supply Drop will land on your head and it's good night Vienna.
It's a very fun game to play with others it's loud and exciting I'd say the missions can leave you feeling a little bit underwhelmed. They do get more very the further you progress but it can be quite repetitive which is why solo gets pretty boring pretty quickly but played with others makes each match unpredictable but be aware you do get a few troll players who just shoot their squadmates which does ruin the experience from time to time.
The graphics are OK. I mean it's not going to blow you away but it's smooth, colorful, and the effects are very well done. The sounds effects are amazing and this game may have the best weapon sound effects in any game with guns, in particular, the heavy weapons are so loud and so overpowered they make you feel invincible. The music, however, leaves a bit to be desired but the voiceovers make up for it think kind of like Starship Troopers but more over the top.
What's Good and What's Bad
What's Good It's one of the most enjoyable online 4 player games out there. The weapons are amazing as are the Supply Drop vehicles. The progression system makes you want to keep playing and the drop-in dropout multiplayer makes it easy to find a squad to join.
What's bad: Friendly-fire can get annoying especially if you've got a troll on your team. The levels are quite repetitive and the music is fairly uninspiring.
What's the Verdict
Helldivers is a whole lot of fun it's a great co-op experience and cooperation is really the key if you don't work together you'll probably all end up dead. The friendly fire makes you consider where you shoot the weapons are awesome and the sound effects are insane so, on the whole, it's a well-made enjoyable, and satisfying online multiplayer experience. If you enjoy top-down shooters, working in a team, and crazy weapons then you should definitely give this one some consideration.
