Hello! I'm Hell and I arranged the different Kingdom Hearts games chronologically to help you locate yourself in this complex story and know which games to play and in what order. Why? because it is my favorite game, due to its complex history. I hope you enjoy!
- Order in which should you play them?
First of all, it should be mentioned that the playable order of the games has nothing to do with the chronological order of the events in the story. Therefore, it is not advisable to play them in chronological order, but rather in the order in which they were released. The reason is as simple as it is complicated. As new games are released, many of the events that are narrated make the interpretation of previous events change completely.
In other words, if you play in chronological order you will be spoiling yourself of the plot twists of the following games, especially as it relates to Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II.
Therefore, the order in which you should play to unravel the story naturally would be the starting order:
- Kingdom Hearts.
- Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
- Kingdom Hearts II.
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.
- Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded.
- Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance.
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage.
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover.
- Kingdom Hearts III.
Keep in mind that if you want to enjoy all these games and know the history of the saga in full, either before or after having played Kingdom Hearts III, the easiest way to do it is with the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix compilations and Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue for PS4, as these two titles include all of the Kingdom Hearts.
Then, as we have already commented, there is the chronological order of the entire Kingdom Hearts universe to which we have dedicated an extensive report, since there is a certain theory that maintains that the temporary location of Union X is not what is thought, but the chronological order most accepted by the vast majority of players is:
- Kingdom Hearts: χ.
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover.
- Kingdom Hearts Unchained Union χ.
- Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage.
- Kingdom Hearts.
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.
- Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.
- Kingdom Hearts II.
- Kingdom Hearts: Coded.
- Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
- Kingdom Hearts III.
Let`s start! take a seat and a cup of coffee so you can read calmly and enjoy in detail why this is the order of the story, here I will give you all the details here!
- Kingdom Hearts: χ.
Is set many years before Sora was born, in a very distant and legendary past that is known as the era of fairy tales, before the worlds were separated. Here we would incarnate one of the many Keyblade holders that existed at that time to experience the fall of light and the great War of the Keyblade in the first person.
Original Platform and Release Date: 2013, Web Browsers (Japan Only)
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover.
This time we are faced with a film that uses the graphic technology of Kingdom Hearts III to tell us what happened in Kingdom Hearts: χ from the point of view of the Master of Masters, a mysterious wielder of the Keyblade who has the gift of seeing the future, and his six apprentices, whom he entrusts with very specific and concrete missions before disappearing without a trace. As you can guess, it also provides new details about the outbreak of the War of the Keyblade.
Original platform and release date: 2017, PS4 (included as part of Kingdom Hearts II.8 Final Chapter Prologue).
- Kingdom Hearts Unchained Union χ.
Original platform and release date: 2017, PS4 (included as part of Kingdom Hearts II.8 Final Chapter Prologue).
- Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
Birth By Sleep takes place ten years before Sora begins his journey as Chosen of the Keyblade. In it we would embody Terra, Ventus and Aqua, three Keyblade bearers who suffered a fate from the machinations of Xehanort, the Seeker of Darkness, who tried to use them for his ultimate purpose of creating the Keyblade χ and thus open Kingdom Hearts. Although it is a prequel, it should be noted that the authentic end of the game directly links to the end of Kingdom Hearts II.
Original platform and release date: 2010, PSP
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage.
The case of A Fragmentary Passage is quite peculiar when it comes to introducing it into the chronology of the saga, since it tells us about Aqua's journey through the Kingdom of Darkness after getting lost in it right at the end of Birth By Sleep. The point is that the passage of time does not exist in this place, so as we advance in its plot (barely a couple of hours long), we also do it in the chronology. Not surprisingly, the final battle occurs in parallel to that of the first Kingdom Hearts and the epilogue takes us right after the end of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, serving as a prologue to Kingdom Hearts III.
Original platform and release date: 2017, PS4 (included as part of Kingdom Hearts II.8 Final Chapter Prologue).
- Kingdom Hearts.
Ten years after the events of Birth By Sleep, Sora, a young inhabitant of the Destiny Islands, is chosen by the Keyblade and sets out on a journey through a multitude of worlds in the company of Goofy and Donald to save his friends Kairi. and Riku and defeat the monstrous Heartless who threaten to plunge everything into darkness, leading him to fight Ansem, Xehanort's Heartless.
Original platform and release date: 2002, PS2
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.
Here we have another game with a somewhat peculiar place in the chronology, since its events span almost a whole year, happening before, during and after what happened in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. In it we will play Roxas, Sora's incorporeal, and we will live his day to day as a member of Organization XIII, where he forged a great friendship with Xion, a replica of Sora, and Axel, another member of the organization.
Original platform and release date: 2009, NDS
- Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.
It is the direct sequel to Kingdom Hearts. Again we would play Sora, who in her search for Riku and King Mickey, ends up arriving at the Castle of Oblivion, a place that takes away your memories as you enter it. Here he had his first encounters with Organization XIII and would meet Naminé, Kairi's incorporeal, although in the end he would end up forgetting all this adventure after being plunged into a long sleep to restore his lost memories. The game also gave us the opportunity to play for the first time with Riku in an extra campaign where we would discover how he managed to escape from the Kingdom of Darkness after ending up in it at the end of Kingdom Hearts. It received a 3D remake for PS2 shortly after its GBA premiere.
Original platform and release date: 2004, GBA
- Kingdom Hearts II.
Kingdom Hearts II begins right where 358/2 ends, with Roxas locked in a virtual version of Twilight Town in which Ansem the Wise and Riku hid him from Organization XIII while Naminé prepared everything for him to become one again with Sora and him. could wake up from its lethargy. Once this prologue was finished, we would once again put ourselves at the controls of Sora to face Organization XIII and end once and for all with its members (whose leader turned out to be Xemnas, Xehanort's incorporeal) in an adventure that would take us to travel again for a multitude of worlds in danger.
Original platform and release date: 2005, PS2
- Kingdom Hearts: Coded.
This mobile game would lead us to investigate Pepito's Diary with a digital version of Sora to try to restore his corrupted data and decipher a strange hidden message that someone has left inside. Although it is usually considered a sequel to Kingdom Hearts II, the events that take place in it occur just before the epilogue of said game. Not surprisingly, in the last scene they show us Mickey writing the letter that Sora receives at the end of the second numbered installment of the saga, where he asks for his help to save Terra, Aqua and Ventus. It received a remake for the Nintendo DS called Kingdom Hearts: Re: coded in 2010.
Original platform and release date: 2009, mobile
- Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
After the events of Kingdom Hearts II, Sora and Riku undergo a test to become Masters of the Keyblade and obtain the power of awakening, so we would accompany them both on a dreamlike journey through the Sleeping Worlds. Throughout the adventure, it would be revealed that if a person's Nobody and Heartless are destroyed, they come back to life as a complete being, prompting the return of the original beings of the members of Organization XIII and Master Xehanort. , who almost succeeds in possessing Sora by making him succumb to darkness. Although he is saved by Axel and Riku, this causes him to fail the exam and lose his powers.
Original platform and release date: 2012, Nintendo 3DS
- Kingdom Hearts III.
The last installment of the saga to date begins right where Dream Drop Distance left off, with Sora trying to regain the power of Awakening to be able to face Xehanort and his new Organization XIII, and thus prevent him from opening Kingdom Hearts with a new War. of the Keyblade. It is the final conclusion of the plot arc of the Seeker of Darkness (Xehanort).
Original platform and release date: 2019, PS4 and Xbox One
