Dragons, dragons, and more dragons š²š
After many months of being patient, PlayStation gamers finally have the ability to play the free-to-play dragon fighting game Century: Age of Ashes. If you are asking yourself if you get to control a dragon, fly at high speeds & altitude, breathe fire, and do all sorts of other dragon stuff such as hatch eggs. The answer is yes, you can do it all and it will be done against other players with cross-platform multiplayer fully supported.
This sounds like the ideal game for anybody who has been watching House of the Dragon. There may not be any Targaryen in this game, but everything else about the fantasy of having your own dragon checks out. This is not some half-ass'd dragon game, it is extremely well done and looks/plays fantastic.
In this video, you will get to witness one of my first online matches of Century: Age of Ashes. As cool as I think dragons are, I was still pretty hesitant about this game. Luckily it's free, so no worry about the cost being a waste. I do however value my time and didn't want to spend it playing something I don't enjoy. Typically flying games just are not for me.
After a few matches, I'm starting to get the hang of Century: Age of Ashes and it's about as good as you'd expect it to be. Of course it has some of the F2P formulas that you are used to seeing. It may be tempting to pay, but you 100% do not have to pay a thing to stay competitive.
I'm a bit disappointed about how they implemented the PS5's DualSense controller, or maybe I should say I'm annoyed that they failed to implement it in any way other than standard functions. I was really expecting the adaptive triggers to be used and have more advanced haptics, but none of that seems to be a thing. At least it runs okay, definitely not great though. At least one PS5, seems to be 4K with mostly 30 fps and no option to favor performance and get 60 fps. This really sucks considering it is such a fast-paced game. It seems like it was mainly designed with PC in mind and then consoles were just an added bonus to increase the size of the small community. Don't get me wrong, it is still very playable and there is a lot of fun to be had. I just feel like they missed the mark for consoles, especially PS5.
In terms of gameplay, the dragons feel very nice to control. Flying feels solid and there isn't much like going full speed and then slamming on the breaks to make it around a tight corner and avoid a fireball. It's a lot easier than other flying games that I've played but still requires some skill to maneuver throughout the battlefield and stay alive.
