It was far worse than I had imagined
Marvel Avengers was a game that excited many fans of Marvel Comics. It was released back in August of 2020 and has gotten some pretty terrible reviews since then. Many have said that the game is still unfinished and has far too many microtransactions. Despite all of the hate, I still had a lingering desire to try the game. I missed out on the demo before launch and was never willing to purchase the game due to the negative talk surrounding it.
During this past week, I finally had an opportunity to play Marvel Avengers. It was announced that there would be a free trial weekend available on PlayStation. I thought to myself, I can finally see what this game is about. They were even letting gamers play the PS5-upgraded version during the free weekend. The entire game, including multiplayer, was going to be free for 4 whole days. Plus, if I happened to love the game it was also on sale for under $25.
I am very sad to announce that not only did I not enjoy this game, I thought it was one of the worst games I had played in a very long time.
The positives:
- The graphics look amazing.
- The DualSense support on PS5 made attacks feel more realistic.
The negatives:
- The campaign is centered around a teenage girl that they force you to control often.
- The story was totally boring and it wouldn't let me skip the dreadful cutscenes.
- The gameplay consisted of button mashing the same attacks over and over.
- There is not much customization unless you're willing to pay extra money for outfits.
One of the coolest things about the old Marvel Ultimate Alliance games was all of the awesome outfits that the characters had, which were unlockable in the game. In Avengers, when you get new equipment, it doesn't change how your character looks, only their stats. All of the cool costumes are locked behind a paywall.
The story felt like it was made for a pre-teen who is obsessed with the Avengers. What do you know, it also seems as though the microtransactions are targeting children who have access to their parent's credit cards.
I cannot believe that I wasted an hour of my time on this lame video game. Worst of all, the ads for the free weekend featured Black Panther front and center. The thing is, he won't even be in the game for a few more weeks. Oh and the PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man character that was talked about at launch still is not in the game.
This is my fair warning, do not play this game. You can watch my video to see how frustrated I became while forcing myself to endure the painful intro. I don't remember many happy moments.
