Part 1
Part 2
Raiding Tombs
Playing through Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a great experience. This two part video is a showcase of gameplay throughout my playthrough in which I eventually achieved 100% completion.
I did not play on the hardest difficulty, so I did not get the platinum trophy. I did however do everything else the game had to offer. It was very well worth my time. I hope you enjoy watching some of my best moments. There are so many beautiful captures within these videos, all on PS5.
After the video by way of writing and photographs I talk a bit more about what the game is like.
The Story
Although I own the other two games previous to Shadow of the Tomb Raider that are part of the franchise’s reboot, I haven’t played either of those. Even without knowledge of those stories, this one was very easy to follow. I wasn’t left wondering what was going on at any time. The game began in Mexico and then worked my way over to Peru and deep into the jungle. I discovered a lost city filled with natives who did not know about the outside technological world. Then after working to defend them, I ended up in some old Christian church ruins that lead me to discover even more lost secrets and wrap up the main story.
The Graphics
Even though this was a PS4 game, it runs at its best on PS5. I chose to play in 4K/30fps instead of the 1080p/60fps. There was much more exploring and solving puzzles rather than combat, so I opted for better resolution over smoother frame rates. I didn’t regret that decision one bit. The environments are simply stunning and I spent a lot of my time simply enjoying the scenery. The few instances that combat came into play, everything still worked just fine. Doesn’t take very long to adjust to the slower refresh rate.
On edge
When going down into the underworld, there were quite a few creepy moments. I jumped more than a few times when things came out of nowhere to attack me. Usually I do not like horror games, but this was a fine balance between terrifying and surprising. I feel like I conquered one of my childhood fears of playing through an entire Tomb Raider game. Especially with my Pulse 3D Wireless Headset amping up the intensity. Sadly no haptic feedback or adaptive trigger DualSense support on this title. Remember this is the PS4 version that I was playing on PS5 via backwards compatibility.
The cleanup
After beating the story, I was left with the last bit of collectibles to discover, which were pretty simple since most are uncovered on the map once you find the backpacks scattered about. My favorite part was actually doing the tombs and crypts. These are puzzles with little to no combat involved, but lots of thinking and possibly dying over and over. Many were really difficult, even just finding out how to properly traverse through each section can be super hard; let alone actually figured out the intricate puzzles. There is also a way to play through these tombs in online co-op if you have a friend to enjoy it with, I did not try that part out.
Hive Gaming Community Selfie Contest (featuring Lara Croft)
For even more details about my thoughts on this game, you can check out my contest entry. It was there that I shared my favorite photo mode images and talked much more in depth about the game itself. Be aware that there was no actual gameplay videos in that blog and I hadn’t yet completed the game. It’s still very well worth your time in my opinion.
More Photos
Photo mode is one of my favorite part of any game these days. Tomb Raider was a great game to stage lovely images. Plus add in the fact that there were around 50 unique outfits to switch between. Enjoy a few more of my favorite photos from my gameplay.
