PlayStation on the go again... finally?
Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a new patent suggesting the hardware manufacturer is looking to produce a PlayStation mobile gaming controller. Source
If you have ever had the desire to enjoy your favorite PlayStation exclusives on your mobile device, then your wish may be coming true soon. You already have the option of using PlayStation's Remote play to enjoy your games on the go. It is even possible to pair a DualShock 4 or DualSense to most smartphones. Still, yet, something feels like it is missing.
The Nintendo Switch's design of connecting two controllers to the side of a fancy OLED screen is ideal for mobile gaming. Now competitors are rising throughout the gaming market. Perhaps the biggest competition for Nintendo is Valve's recently delayed Steam Deck. There are many options from Microsoft to play Xbox and Windows games on the go. Even the forgotten Google Stadia provides a decent option of games on the go.
PlayStation's current offering works okay, but is behind the rest of the pack. Meanwhile, PS5 sales are at the top of the leaderboard and continue to rise every week despite manufacturing shortages. It seems about time for PlayStation to upgrade the mobile gaming department. In comes this potential new mobile gaming controller.
We know that the PS VR 2 is said to possibly release some time in 2022. It is a fact that the new motion controllers will adapt the PS5 DualSense controller's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. From the looks of this new mobile controller patent, the same cannot be said about implementing the new tech.
The design of the controller pulls heavily from the look of the DualShock 4 rather than DualSense and was filed by SIE Japan. The controller is described as having “a left-side grip portion and a right-side grip portion gripped by the left and right hands of the user.” Also featured but not included in the drawings on the patent is “a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion.” Source
Personally, I'm not one that has been craving a way to play my PlayStation games on the go. Any time that I spend gaming is done from the comfort of my home. If I'm on the go, I'm usually busy doing something and don't have time to play games. I know for many such as travlers and children, having a solid mobile gaming controller option from PlayStation would be very welcomed.
What do you think? Does this new patent excite you?
