Hi there. In this Pokemon TCG post I cover the Alakazam evolution line from the upcoming Mega Evolution set. There is also new news of English product of September's Mega Evolution set.
Abra
This Abra has 50 HP, 1 retreat cost and Dark weakness. The Teleportation attack can come in handy at times. For one Psychic energy you deal 10 damage and run away to the Bench.
This Abra could be replaced by these 2 other Abras in the G, H, I regulation format. The Psyshot one looks okay.
Kadabra
Kadabra is the evolved version of Abra. It has 80 HP, 1 retreat cost and Dark weakness.
The Psychic Draw ability activates when you evolve from Abra to this. Upon evolution, you have the option of drawing 2 cards.
For one Psychic energy, the Super Psy Bolt attack does 30 damage. It is an okay Stage 1 attacker as you work your way to Alakazam.
There are other Kadabra cards available. They are not bad but this new Kadabra with a draw ability is pretty good.
Alakazam
Alakazam is the final evolved form of Abra. This has 140 HP, 1 retreat cost and Dark weakness.
Like Kadabra, Alakazam has the Psychic Draw ability. Upon evolution, Alakazam gives the option of drawing 3 cards instead of 2.
The Hand Power attack requires 1 Psychic energy for its attack. Place 2 damage counters (20 damage) on your opponent's Active Pokemon for each card in your hand.
A hand size of 5 would make Hand Power place 10 damage counters (100 damage). A larger hand size of 10 cards would make Hand Power more dangerous at 20 damage counters (200 damage). In theory, Alakazam can be a very dangerous single prize attacker.
Other Alakazam Cards
There are 2 other Alakazam cards available. The one from Twilight Masquerade is not really used.
For the Alakazam ex card, it was seen as game breaking at first because of its Dimensional Hand attack from the bench. It is was found out that it was not really competitive. Maybe this card sees a return with the Kadabra draw engine.
Mega Evolution Products
The Mega Evolution set is to be released internationally in September 2025. Here are some revealed products in the form of Elite Trainer Boxes, promo cards and other sealed products.
The 2 featured Pokemon in this set are Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex.
Booster Bundle (6 Packs) & Build & Battle Kits
Psyduck Promo Card
Japan's has had this Psyduck card for a while. It is a good card as it's ability prevents players from knocking out their own Pokemon to use an ability.
The Damp ability on Psyduck prevents the abilities of Dusclops, Dusknoir and Magneton from being used.
Bulbasaur Promo Card
In the Journey Together set, there was a promo card with the booster box. With the Mega Evolution set, you get this illustration rare Bulbasaur promo card with a booster box purchase.
Riolu and Alakazam Promo Cards
The Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs) for Mega Evolution feature Riolu and Alakazam as the promo cards.
The Riolu illustration rare card is very nice and colourful. I am not sure how Riolu got up there.
Alakazam looks okay here. He is doing some sort of pose.
