Hi there. In this post I share my experience at a Pokemon TCG - Phantasmal Flames prerelease event.
I take the trip to Toronto for this event plus do some other shopping errands. I wanted to go to two events but I got one. These events sell out fast as players and collectors are chasing after Charizard cards.
Note that this post is long. Read what you want.
About Prerelease Events
For the Pokemon TCG game, prerelease events are casual tournament events where participants pay a tournament fee and participate in a small tournament at a card shop.
The one I went to is at A & C Games near the Chinatown area in Toronto and near the University of Toronto campus. The fee was $40 CAD plus tax. This price is not too bad as you get a Build and Battle Box. This box comes with a preconstructed deck of 40 cards plus 4 booster packs inside. The normal retail price of this is around 80 CAD after the release date. Fourty dollars for this product and getting cards before the release date is a really good deal.
Different card stores have their own way of doing prizes. Some stores don't give out extra prizing so everyone (win or lose) gets bonus booster packs. In the Toronto area, stores usually give out bonus packs in you for each win you get. At this store, it is 1 extra pack per win. There are 3 best of one rounds at this prerelease tournament. Screenshot picture below.
Shortly after you receive your build and battle kit, you have around 30 minutes to build your deck. Starting from the Mega Evolutions set, the preconstructed decks do have some good playable cards for competitive standard play. Cards like Lillie's Determination, Hilda and Dawn are good.
After the 30 minute deck building period, the 3 round tournament begins.
This tournament had 31 players. I do get nervous seeing a lot of people in a not so big space. Then I remind myself that can hold my own against other regular players.
Possible Prerelease Decks
This prerelease event was on November 9, 2025. It might have been the last date for Phantasmal Flames prerelease. I did research some prerelease decks and cards from this set before this event. This Latin Youtuber video was really helpful. I took 4 screenshots of the 4 prerelease decks. They feature either Zacian, Toxtricity, Flygon or Ceruledge.
Receiving My Build & Battle Kit, Opening And Deck
At this prerelese event, you get called up by name to receive your kit. You wait a bit until you are allowed to open up your Build and Battle Kit, open packs and build your deck.
There is always people going crazy when they pull something great. Two people pulled this Special Illustration Rare of Mega Charizard X ex.
From the 4 packs in the kit, I got no Pokemon ex. The only good pull was this illustration art rare of Ambipom. I actually like this art card. Photos from my Redmi Note 13 Pro phone.
When it came to my deck, I got the Zacian deck. From the packs I got an extra 2 Zacian. I was debating of putting 5 Zacians which is going past the usual max 4 copies of a card. At prerelease events, you can go past the 4 copies maximum. I ended up with 4 Zacian.
Getting the Zacian deck was good, as I got some more copies of Lillie's Determination and a few more copies of Hilda. Hilda cards are around 4 CAD each and are not really available.
As my pulls were not great, I kept the Zacian preconstructed deck and made a few minor changes. I added a fourth Zacian and I removed 1 Psychic Energy for a Charmander. This Charmander is not meant for attacking. It was the only Pokemon with a zero retreat cost and it synergized well with Wonderous Patch. Wonderous Patch allowed for accelerating Psychic Energy from discard to a Benched Psychic Pokemon.
I finished building my deck with around 10 minutes to spare. One of my aquaintance friends was there and we agreed to do a practice match before round one. She had the Ceruledge deck.
I ended up winning this one fairly easily. The Ceruledge deck has the best firepower out of the 4 prerelease decks but it is inconsistent with setup and getting off attacks.
Round One
I think my round one opponent was a girlfriend of some regular player. The girl to guy ratio at this Phantasmal Flames prerelease was almost 1 to 1. A lot females like going to the lower stakes casual Prerelease events as they want to collect cards and open packs. You also get cards early.
My opponent had the same Zacian deck as me. I won the opening coin flip and went first.
This mirror match was a lot of back and forth. I take a knockout, she takes a knockout and so on until she is not able to power up any more attackers. In this Zacian mirror match up, if you are unable to powerup Zacians and take knockouts you lose the prize race. Being lucky in this mirror match up helped as I did not have bad hands or draws. I get the win.
We do a second practice game to pass the time. I think I won again.
I later find out that she pulled a Mega Diancie ex.
The thing was she never used it a give it to her friend on her right. My round one opponent was not sure on how to use Mega Diancie ex. There are no official rules from the store about lending cards or not. I used to trade cards at a prerelease event once last year but I don't do it these days. It does not seem right to trade cards before the start of the tournament. I go with what I get.
If she had Mega Diancie ex in the deck, I don't think I would get this round 1 win.
Round Two
My round two opponent was this guy who was on the streetcar with me on the way to the store. He was 1 win and 0 loss too. It was another Zacian mirror matchup.
Both of our starts are slow but I later gain momentum, got better setups and have a good amount of attackers ready. I get the win in the end.
As there was around 10 minutes left, we do a second practice game. This opponent got he Mega Lopunny ex out in the mid-game. This was an auto-loss. I would have to hit this thing 3 times while the Mega Lopunny ex one hit knocks out Zacian.
I was lucky to not see Mega Lopunny ex in the official game. My record is 2 wins and 0 losses. Very good.
Round Three
My round 3 opponent was also 2 wins and 0 losses. She was the friend on the right of my round 1 opponent. It was another Zacian mirror matchup. Why three mirrors in a row??!
We know each others deck and she knows about my Charmander tech card. (She was amazed by this at first in my round 1 matchup.) I know she has a Mega Diancie ex that she got from my round 1 opponent. If it is prized amongst the 4 Prize cards, then I can win.
Around the start of the game, my opponent has self-doubt. Maybe her hand is not good. My starting hand and setup was not great either but I don't show it.
This round 3 matchup ended up bad for me. It got out of control with near dead draws and I end up losing. I see the Mega Diancie ex on her Bench and knew this was near impossible to win. Very unlucky and kind of dumb.
I have never seen this player at regular standard local events. It was weird to see a player do this fast fidgety hand movements and go hard at a prerelease casual event. Oh well.
Post-Tournament, Prizing, Closing Notes
I end up with a 2 wins and 1 loss record. This is still pretty good considering I had no Pokemon ex in my deck. I win an extra 2 packs in the end. My standing was 6 out of 31 players. The first place player was the round 3 opponent who won against me. That round 3 game was for first place apparently.
What was weird that my round 1 opponent and my round 3 opponent left after the 3 rounds. They ended up not getting their extra prizes. What the heck?
From the 2 extra packs I won, I did not get anything good. Not great pack luck with the 2 Vileplumes.
From the extra Prize Pack Series pack I did not get big hits. But that's okay.
There was a third guy who pulled a special illustration rare (SIR) of Mega Charizard X ex. All three of these lucky guys are friends. What are the chances?
After the event, there were raffle draws and a pizza party. Each of us get 1 square slice of pizza. The Pizza bonus was nice and not all card stores do this at their prerelease events.
I did win one of the raffle draws. It was one free CGC card grading.
My aim was to get some stuff and play well. These days I don't aim for first place as it takes some pressure off of me. I just focus on playing well and getting stuff.
Getting 2 wins and 1 loss plus rank 6 is pretty good. I did my best given the luck I had. Overall, this was a good prerelease event. No regrets for the 40 CAD fee.
