Pokemon TCG Pocket: Turtonator + Flareon ex Fire Deck
Hi there. I present a fire deck from the Pokemon TCG Pocket game. It is a Turtonator and Flareon ex deck.
Core Cards
Here are the core cards in this deck. This time around, I include the art cards image for the cards when possible. They look nice.
Flareon ex
In the physical Pokemon TCG, Flareon ex is good. In the Pocket game, Flareon ex is also good.
This Flareon ex has 150HP, 2 retreat cost, Water weakness, one ability and one attack.
The Fire Spin attack requires 2 Fire Energy and 1 Colourless Energy to deal 130 damage. 130 damage is quite a bit as it can knockout a lot of Basic Pokemon ex. Its drawback is that you discard 2 Fire Energy after using Fire Spin.
What goes well with the Fire Spin attack is the Combust ability on Flareon ex. Once during your turn, you may attach 1 Fire Energy from your discard pile and attach it to this Pokemon. The drawback is that Flareon ex takes 20 damage. You do accelerate Fire energy but you take damage and can be vulnerable to Cyrus.
Turtonator
Turtonator is a beefy Basic Fire Pokemon. It has 120 HP, 4 retreat cost and Water weakness. For 2 Fire energy and 1 Colourless Energy, the Fire Spin attack deals 90 damage. The drawback is discarding 1 Fire Energy after its attack.
This Turtonator on its own is not great but it goes well with...
Kiawe
Kiawe did not see much play upon release but it is seeing use with Turtonator and the recent Flareon ex. Choose 1 of your Alolan Marowak or Turtonator. Take 2 Fire Energy from your Energy Zone and attach it to that selected Pokemon. Then your turn ends.
Having your turn ends after you play Kiawe is not that bad. If you don't plan on attacking for the current turn then attaching 2 Fire Energy from Kiawe plus 1 manual attach is pretty powerful. Kiawe is kind of busted if you go first during your first turn as you cannot attach energy going first on the first turn.
Eevee Bag
Eevee Bag is a broken Item card for Eevee themed decks. For your Eevee evolution Pokemon you can either boost 10 damage when you attack the opponent's Active Pokemon or heal 20 damage from each of your Eevee evolution Pokemon.
Eevee
My Eevee choice is the above card. Drawing a card as an attack is not great as it does not deal damage but drawing 1 card is good.
I think other Eevee choices are okay too. Eevee ex could be okay but it is a 2 Points Pokemon that is kind of vulnerable.
Here are the other Eevee choices. The Tackle Eevee for 20 damage could be okay.
Sample Decklist
Decklist
Pokémon: 6
2 Turtonator A3 37
2 Eevee A3b 55
2 Flareon ex A3b 9
Trainer: 14
2 Eevee Bag A3b 66
2 Professor's Research P-A 7
2 Poké Ball P-A 5
1 Cyrus A2 150
1 Sabrina A1 225
2 Kiawe A3 150
1 Potion P-A 1
1 Red Card P-A 6
1 Giant Cape A2 147
1 Rocky Helmet A2 148
This list is similar to this decklist from Pokemon-Zone website. I use Red Card instead of Mars, one Potion over Pokemon Center Lady and I add a few more Tool cards.
This Eevee deck does not need 4 Eevees but you can modify this to include more Eevee I guess. Deck space is tight though.
The ideal start for this deck is to have Turtonator in the Active Spot and use Kiawe for turn 1. You then attack with Turtonator while you set up Flareon ex at the back. Setup Fire energy to your attackers and start attacking.
You do have to be careful with the Flareon ex ability. When you deal 20 damage to Flareon ex and accelerate 1 Fire Energy you are more vulnerable to one hit knockout attacks from the opponent. You also have to be mindful of Cyrus from the opponent.
Advantages
- Good against Grass and Metal types that are weak to Fire
- First turn going first Kiawe with Turtonator is very powerful with energy acceleration.
- Flareon ex has good energy acceleration from discard pile
- Flareon ex can have one hit knockout power on most Basic Pokemon
Disadvantages
- Weak against Water attackers
- Deck feels slow without Kiawe first turn.
- Flareon ex has good firepower but is vulnerable to Cyrus.
- Turotnator 4 retreat cost.
Closing Notes
This Turtonator & Flareon ex fire deck is a decent fire deck. It is not top tier but it can compete against most meta decks. I once lost to this deck while I was running a Primarina ex water deck.
A turn 1 Kiawe with Turtonator is lucky and powerful. With this combo you put opponents under pressure as they try to setup.
