Hello Hive ! 👋
I am Evian, and I am something of a speedrunner myself.
If you want to know me a bit more and about speedrunning, you can go read my Introduce Yourself post.
Today I am going about the newest step I reached towards my current goal : getting into Furi speedrunning leaderboard top 5.
Probably the beginning of a series of blog posts ! This one will also serve of a first introduction about Furi speedruns.
For context, Furi is a boss rush which mixes precise close-quarters combats and shoot'em up to get the quintessence of the challenging action game.
By the way, it also has an orgasmic soundtrack.
1 week ago, I submitted Furi at the biggest French speedrunning caritative marathon.
Basically in such a marathon, speedrunners relay themselves during a weekend (or more, some marathons last an entire week!), days and nights, to showcase their runs to viewers.
The places are very limited ! For this one, only 1-5% of the submissions will have the honor to be shown on the big scene.
They have to be the most entertaining, showcased by the bests !
So I submitted Furi. I'm pretty confident about the entertainement value of the game (I only play top games 😎) but about my level... 🤔
I actually submitted a race with the holder of the French record, also 3rd in the world with a time of 28:48.
At this moment, I was 10th in the world, "only" the 4th French with a 29:54. An entire minute of difference !
That might be too much to showcase a close race, and I knew it will count for the marathons reviewers.
To increase my chances, I decided to aim for a goal I had set aside : beating the second best french on the game, which is also the 5th in world.
To do that I finally decided to train the hardest boss to optimise in speedrun : The Song.
While you usually just use normal shots against most of the bosses, for this one you have to switch between normal and charged ones to optimize damage in a series of very precise inputs.
I never really trained the boss... because I sucked at it so I didn't like it. 😅
But to reach my goal I had to actually be more efficient than only launching runs which would die on the same mistakes over and over.
After a couple of days of training I finally became pretty decent at the boss, getting the 4th best time. It was time to launch runs !
I quickly finally beat my Personal Best (PB) with a 29:39 after 4 months ! A 15 seconds improvement which grants me the 8th world best time.
And I feel like it's only the beginning (which is very rare after a PB!) : I still made a lot of avoidable mistakes.
