Hello, gamers!
Epic games are giving free games every week and I have got a few titles over the past year for free. Although I have never installed any of the games today I was feeling a bit different. I wanted to see how many games I have collected. There were some titles that I will play someday, Death Stranding was a noticeable one in my library.
I just checked and there were some cool titles to grab on their web page. I get them even if I don't know anything about the game maybe they will be useful someday.
One such game that intrigued my interest is The Long Dark. I quickly realised that it is a survival game and I like this genre so, I downloaded and installed it. I went into the game with no knowledge.
When I opened the game, there were a few modes like Survival but I found what I feel is a campaign story mode called "WinterMute". This is the story of two friends who crash-landed in the Northern Canadian Wilderness and have to survive on their own.
Episode 1 - "Do Not Go Gentle"
I had no idea how it will play out if it is going to be a hardcore survival or more story-oriented. The opening scenes were plane crashes but the game started 12 hours before this dramatic plane crash event.
Mackenzie, our protagonist was doing final preparations when his old friend, Astrid pays a surprise visit and asks me to take her to a remote village where someone needs an urgent cure. She had this mysterious case with her.
I noticed some stats displayed on the screen such as my hunger and thirst levels, temperature and a sleep meter. There was also a health meter that displays health in Calories. I have to keep an eye on all of these, it won't be an easy task for sure.
The first chapter was called memories. It was like a prologue to the actual game. One of the earliest missions was to start a fire.
You need a starter, fuel and tinder to start a fire. Accelerant will accelerate the process. I found some sticks and crushed a wooden box to make tinder (costs some calories).
This is the time when we made the final preparation for our journey to the Great Bear Island.
I like the stylized graphics in this game. I don't want the ultra-realistic graphics every time I play a game. For me, the most important part is the storytelling and music.
Chapter 2 started with a cutscene showing plane losing power and going to crash land over the frozen wilderness at night.
I fell into a ravine and was bleeding, my first objective was to stop the bleeding. I found a cloth but was looking for meds where I have to craft some bandages out of that piece of cloth. Stupid me, lost some blood figuring out this basic thing.
But I manage to craft a bandage and now my bleeding was stopped. I found some more supplies living on the ground.
Look at my status, I had sprained my ankle and wrist and was freezing with a temperature of -20 C at night.
I started a fire after collecting some wooden sticks from the wreckage. But I was still freezing and found out that I should be doing that inside a cave. I also found a soda can to drink and I drank it thinking it will improve my health but it didn't make much difference.
I rested inside the cave and woke up with increased hunger and thirst. My calories were also going down. I had only 500 calories left now.
My objective was to climb out of this ravine and look for Astrid. But I found no way of getting out from there. At last, I tried jumping off the cliff and died immediately.
I restarted but now I was feeling cold and parched. I had to find some way to get water. After looking through my items, I found out that I can use a can to melt water and boil it to make it suitable for drinking. So my water problem was now fixed but my calories were going down now.
My energy got so low that I was in a state of dizziness and could not even focus properly. I needed some food asap and for that, I had to get out of this damm ravine. After looking for some more time my health dropped down to zero and I did it again. Two deaths over a small period. Both are due to not finding a way out. I don't know if I need to craft a ladder or something to get out of here or if I am just blind and can't see the way out (this one is more probable).
I had to quit it there. Maybe I need some rest IRL, who knows? 😂
Thanks for reading...
Until next time...
