I feel the same when you said that the best adaptation are the one where there is a clear goal or mission and this understanding will help improve getting more adaptations to work in this industry.
Although I am not a huge fan of Marvel games but they have done wonders with their spider man series. Been doing that for years. And the more I think the more I realise that is it not only the story or protagonist, it is the complete package that has to be good for a game to work well. Everything including the story, graphics, combat, progression, gameplay, music all these factors can make or break any game.
