There is a reason why The Witcher 3 is considered one of the best games there is. Geralt is such a compelling character and the world of The Witcher is full of mystery and fun! CDPR did an awesome job in expanding the book universe. If you played The Witcher 3 you’d know that there are multiple choices you can make that affect the ending, but did you know there’s actually a canon ending to the game?
I know, you might be scratching your head, because after all, you probably never even heard that there was a canon ending, because in order to know about it you actually need to read the comics, that take place before, and after the third game, and good ole Gamergeek has read them.
The big decision in The Witcher 3 is who you want to romance, Triss or Yennifer. If you’ve read my previous post about The Witcher you’d know that I think the biggest problem with the games are Triss, so it’s no secret that I prefer the Yen romance, but did you know that is actually the canon romance?

And before we get into that, I also have to mention the canon ending for Ciri as it goes hand in hand with the Yen thing. Ciri can have three endings, depending on the choices that Geralt makes. If Geralt discourages her, she ultimately dies when she goes to fight The White Frost. The ending see’s Geralt heading back to the Crones Hut and waiting as hundreds of monsters surround him, hinting at a suicide by monster.

Then there is the one where she becomes Empress, even though she doesn’t want to. And this is the most depressing ending of all. Throughout Ciri’s entire life, she always had to do what others wanted her to do, and never really had a choice for herself.

As a kid Ciri wanted to stay with Geralt at Kaer Morhen to train, instead she gets dropped off at the Temple of Melitele ( for her own safety) and “pawned '' off to Yennefer.

She is hunted by Emhry so that he could marry her.

She is wanted by the Lodge of Sorceress so that she could marry the Prince of Kovir and continue the Elder Blood line ( which she eventually agrees to, given no choice).

And she is hunted by Eredin and his Riders, so that they could harness her power to full on invade the main world of The Witcher.

And when she becomes the Empress, it is out of a need to, not a want to. In order to get this ending, a few things need to happen, mainly Nilfgaard needs to win the war, which also makes a very sorry world state.
And than we have the correct ending, where Ciri becomes a Witcher. This is the best outcome for a few reasons, the big one being is that this is what Ciri always wanted to do since she was a kid. Sure it’s a dangerous life, but Ciri was never one for safety. In this ending Ciri will travel with Geralt for a bit, before going off on her own and becoming a legend in her own right. Emhry believes that Ciri is dead, which means that he won’t search for her anymore, and Geralt never loses a daughter, and Ciri doesn’t lose her real father.

And the comics seem to back this up, and since the comics were created with CDPR, it seems like what we are going to be talking about next is canon.
In The Witcher comic Curse of Crows we see Geralt and Ciri reunited. They are on their way to Novigrad where they are hunting a Striga. On their adventures Geralt tells Ciri about the time he Cured Adda ( Foltest’s child) of her Striga curse, and how young and stupid he was.

The very fact that Geralt and Ciri are together suggests that Ciri is alive and became a witcher, even referring to herself as one. The comic would have to take place after the ending of the game, in fact I would say it take place before the epilogue also, while Ciri and Geralt are travelling together but before he settles down with Yennifer. The reason why is because Ciri is still trying to prove herself and is still being treated as a child.

And then Yennefer makes an appearance. At first, I wasn’t so sure if Yen would have been the canon choice, as the two’s interaction is kind of weird, with Geralt about to get freaky in a bath with two women, before Yennifer appears, scolds him, tells him it’s alright, then disappears. Before making the water in the tub scolding hot.

And to get revenge Yennefer bathed with another man. But then I remembered the books, and this was exactly how their relationship was like in it. Hell, at one point Yennifer was actively seeing Geralt and a Mage, which almost saw the two duel to the death.
And after that, ( the hot tub incident) things go back to normal, they sleep together, and have the exact same dynamic they had in the books, which is Yennifer wearing the pants. Not to mention Ciri mentions to Geralt about them being together.

There is also something that points to Geralt not being with Triss and it’s that she’s never mentioned in the comics where as Yenn is mentioned a few times.
And just to add a little bonus lore here let me tell you this, in a comic called called Of Flesh and Flame. Geralt takes on a contract to find out who has been sleeping with someones daughter. And it turns out it is Dandelion. Dandelion was using a magic box to get him in and out of her room. It is also revealed here that Priscilla had broken up with him which on one hand is a surprise but on the other it really isn’t.

After reading some runes on the box, Geralt and Dandelion are flown to Ofir, where they are taken prisoner. It is here it is revealed that neither of them had ever been there and Geralt, pretending to be named Lambert, is forced to take the task to kill Geralt of Rivia, the murderer of their Prince.

If you remember in Hearts of Stone, our first interaction with Olgried is taking on a contract to kill a giant frog in the Sewers, which turns out to be said Prince. And after killing the beast it turns into it’s human form and Geralt is than captured by the Offeri.

Well long story short, Geralt gets involved with an enemy of Yen’s who betrays him and so in response he ships her to her in Dandelions box. Once again, the comics mention Yennefer, but there is no mention of Triss.
