I'm usually not big on horror games but I found this one interesting to try out due to its good ratings and a great story. The game is named Martha Is Dead and is a horror game, specifically it is a psychological horror. There are no scary monsters or really not any jump scares also. The game was released at the end of February. In this post, I share my thoughts about the title.
As the name indicated, Martha Died. Martha is the twin sister of the protagonist Giulia, I play as Giulia. While taking photos near the lake I spotted something in the water, Martha has drowned. When the parents found out, Giulia happened to act as if she was Martha because her parents loved Martha but not so much Giulia. The parents fell for it because they were identical.
Now Giulia had a feeling that Martha didn't drown by accident and decided to start finding out what happened to her. From there on a lot of shit is going down that I am not going to spoil if any of you want to play this game in the future.
Photos are captured in-game.
The game takes place in 1944, in Italy, during WW2. Developers had captured this setting nicely and I loved it. While you try to find out what happened to the sister, there is war always in the background. Warplanes fly overhead, bombs fall, and war news comes from the radio. You have even a role in helping Germans or partisans in one sidequest, you can choose which one to help. You play in first-person mode with your character.
My bedroom
As I mentioned earlier, shit gets fucked up and in the end, you don't really know whether it's the reality or the imagination of the protagonist.
The game also gets quite nasty at times. In fact so gruesome that Playstation decided to censor some of the scenes in this game. It's not censored on Xbox or PC, I play on PC. The game also asks if you want to see these scenes or if you are sensitive then you can censor some scenes. For example, if you play an uncensored game then you can see how you cut off the face of someone and put it on your own, quite disgusting but I'm not too sensitive to seeing stuff like this.
The graphics are beautiful and well crafted. The game even has ray-tracing and DLSS. I turned it all to the max but got around 50fps. I got a very high-end PC that should have gotten a full 60fps out of this game at least so I think that game needs a bit better optimization.
Most of the gameplay takes place in the house but you also have some nearby areas. The forest was cool but got a bit old walking there in the end. It takes time walking and not much happening in there.
Graveyard
It takes about 6 hours to beat the game, not very much but overall I enjoyed playing through it. The story was intriguing and the game is beautiful. The ending could have been better in my opinion, but I was still left with some questions. Is it worth 30eur in Steam ? Yeah, I think it is if you value a good horror story but definitely not a higher price than that.
