In one of their most recent regular blog posts, Bungie decided to remind people about the fact they teamed up with BattleEye and how they want to maintain a secure environment for the players.
"Our goal is to maintain a secure environment for Destiny 2, as it features both PvE and PvP combat in an evolving, dynamic world. Maintaining the integrity of our security is a complex and long-term process. In some cases it means teaming with partners like BattlEye and following their recommendations, in others, it means choosing to not support platforms that could provide bad actors with ways of compromising our own Bungie developed anti-cheat security systems. "
What they mean by this is they're re-iterating on the fact they won't support the Steam Deck, which by extension means they will refuse to support Linux as a whole.
And that's important.
I game on Linux, but I couldn't care less about Destiny, but I'm not everyone, and now with the recent release of the Steam Deck which sold out all its reservations, not supporting your game on Linux and at least trying to secure a future there is in a way - being stuck in the past.
The PC gaming landscape of old, where Windows is a necessity and something we just have to live with is already changing, and being openly hostile to a community of people who just want to enjoy your work and have fun is a terrible look for your company.
It's like how Steve Ballmer once called Linux a cancer.
And is Bungie anywhere near in the right here? Not at all.
BattleEye is already supported natively on Linux and works through Steam's WINE/Proton compatibility layer without a hitch.
Not to mention the fact there's already an actively mantained Linux build of the game running on Stadia - the difference there being that Stadia is a close platform.
And what about the "bad actors"?
I don't know where this myth started, but I don't see any game that starts supporting Linux get immediately filled with hackers.
In fact, the tools made for this scummy purpose are way better on Windows than on Linux.
Bungie is one email away from enabling supporting on the Deck and all other Linux machines; however, by releasing statements like these, they've shown themselves to be openly hostile to even their fanbase, that wants nothing but to be able to play their favourite game on their favourite platform.
They're actively banning people who try to get around their arbitrary limitations, people who might not even know this is happening since for so long Linux gaming has been treated like this.
But I'm 100% sure that once the big bucks start flowing in for Valve because of the Deck, Bungie will have a change of heart.
Just like Microsoft did after Ballmer.
But remember kids, corporations aren't your friends. Not even if they make great games that you enjoy.
