From now on Apple considers itself a gaming company
In recently released documents regarding the company's profits, Apple has made it clear that it competes with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the main players in the gaming field, and emphasizes that it recognizes the importance of gaming in its platforms.
In a regulatory report that Apple submitted last Friday, it claimed that its platforms compete as gaming platforms with the traditional gaming platforms of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.
This is an unexpected statement, especially given that Apple previously claimed that its platforms only compete with Google's Android operating system in the field of smartphones, and Microsoft's PC and Windows operating system in terms of gaming.
Gaming is an important business that makes Apple a lot of money. By comparison, Apple earns more from gaming than Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony and Activision earn together, and in addition competes directly with these companies thanks to the Apple Arcade service launched in 2019 for iOS, macOS and tvOS.
More data regarding Apple's participation in the gaming market was revealed during Epic Games' legal proceedings against Apple.
Among those figures, it was revealed that 70% of Apple's profits from its digital store, the App Store, come from gaming.
This is a profit that a total of 10% of App Store users generate for it.
It was further revealed that Apple is responsible for a third of all transactions in the entire gaming market.
