Gunfire Reborn describes itself as 'an adventure level-based game featured with FPS, Roguelite and RPG. Players can control heroes with various abilities to experience diverse Build gameplay, use randomly dropped weapons to explore random levels. This game can be played by single player, or Co-op up to four.'.
That last bit there is key: "Co-op up to four". Gunfire Reborn is kind of game that would be immediately forgettable as a single player experience and has become one of may favorite games ever due to it's online coops.
Put very simply Gunfire Reborn has run-and-gun dungeon crawling that feels pitch perfect. As soon as you start up you see what you are going to need to do to advance, are unlocking new weapons and abilities, and when death does come for you you find yourself at one of the biggest skill trees in recent memory.
So often when games introduce this level of complexity it can make gameplay feel hard to understand or slow everything down to a crawl. Not here. After picking an adorable animal warrior and starting weapon you're going to quickly find yourself gunning down everything in your path, finding new weapons, meeting great NPCs, and uncovering the little surprises that make this game special.
Due to the extreme variety in the weapons, skills, and ability open to you here you're going to have to think a bit about ever piece of equipment you pick up as you hit higher levels. Do you want a speedy shotgun, that sniper rifle that grants bleed, or the rocket launcher that reloads when unequipped? At the end of almost every room you are going to be faced with quick choices when it comes to what abilities you choose to boost, what weapons you choose to use, and how you choose to fight.
I usually play with 2 close friends and, by the end of the game, one of us will always be carrying the other two. This is a game where you want to come up with the best build you can for the options you are given and sometimes it really just all comes together. That said, there are also options and play styles available for people who want to try and find a good gun early and buff it for the whole game, limiting their options but boosting their power. How you play is really up to you and you're going to need to experiment!
In one of the most crazy runs we had in the last month I was able to land a weapon called Talasman with a rare ability that causes a evil ball of acid to appear ad hunt down the closes enemy 80% of the time if you deal a critical hit. For most biped enemies that critical area is going to be the head and, uniquely enough, all shots from Talasman pull towards the head. Before I knew it I was rolling all the enemies before is with a tsunami of acid but ... we still got rolled by the final boss. And you know what? it was fun as hell!
The artistic design choices made by this game are very middle of the road, leaning a bit eastern. Instead of the normal Stone Golems and evil wizards you have Terracotta Warriors and Kappa. This really helps give the game a style of it's own while keeping everything very approachable and not so dark. Personally I think it works really well!
If you and your playgroup are looking for a new experience to pick up I highly recommend Gunfire Reborn for it's raw fun factor, ease to pick up, and deep pool of gameplay to explore. Not only that, it's cheap! Only 11.99. That pulls a lot of weight with me and, with that considered, I feel like Gunfire Reborn is one of the best bangs for your buck currently on Steam. Give it a shot and let me know what you think!
