A while ago, the colony sim Surviving Mars was free on Epic Games. Time to try it!
I enjoy colony sims, building games and survival, so this game was definitely worth a try. I've played for a couple of hours and I gotta say, I still don't know if I like the game.
It's probably my own fault. You can start with a few tutorials:
I ehm... did the first one and then jumped into the deep end.
New game!
You start with picking a nice spot on the red planet. You will then have to land a rocket which is filled with drones, supplies and some prefab buildings, amongst which a drone hub. This will house your drones once your rocket is fueled up and on its way back to earth. The drones will perform tasks for you within range of this hub and they can recharge their power here.
Your first order of business is to make sure you've got power. I mean, what's a drone without power, right? Just decoration and we're not here to decorate. We want to colonize, because we are a plague gone galactic!
Ahem, aaaanyway...
You either have a prefab power station (Stirling Generator) with you, or you go for solar or wind power. Eventually you'll probably use all of these things along with some power storage.
To get rid of your rocket, you have to refuel it for the journey back home. To do this, you'll need water and a fuel station and some pipes and ofcourse, powerlines.
You can order new supplies, prefab buildings, drones and vehicles from earth, arriving in, you guessed it, a rocket. Aside from that, you'll mostly gather resources from Mars itself. Your drones can do a bit, your vehicles can help you and there are also resource collector buildings. You'll also need places to stash all of your resources, so you'll be making some depots.
I was well on my way and build a wind turbine up on a hill, where it should be most efficient and then I figured I need a ramp up there.
It all went downhill from there! Except that it wasn't a smooth ride down that hill. My ramp building skills were no natural born talent. Oh no, I eventually ended up with an inaccessible hill and I spent the next hour or so, trying to build a ramp that would get me access again.
So right now, my Mars surface is filled with waste rock, created by trying to flatten spaces and building usable ramps. Then there was a meteor shower and I figured "Hey, maybe I can protect my resources with a dome!". So I build a dome, which is supposed to house colonists.
It does not hold resources. Those are 'outside buildings'.
So much to learn!
So that's where I left things. Frustrated by an inaccessible hill, some resources lost due to meteor strikes and some buildings destroyed by said meteors. Don't worry though, the drones are quick to repair, as long as they don't get hit themselves.
I haven't called over colonists yet, because obviously, with a commander like me, they don't stand a chance. I won't be responsible for humanity's first disaster on Mars!
Maybe I should finish the tutorials...
