I decided to take a small break from the campaign in The First Descendant to try and unlock a new character. At the moment there's 21 characters in the game and they can all be unlocked either by paying up real money or you can farm them. I locked my targets on Freyna and got to farming.
Why Freyna?
Out of all the characters in the game Freyna seemed like the simplest one to unlock. For a lot of the characters you'll have to grind out several sub-parts to be able to craft the four main parts you need to craft the character itself. For Freyna I noticed that all the main parts dropped from missions which meant unlocking her wouldn't require that much effort. These were low level missions and each part had a 20% chance to drop at the end of the mission.
I had one part already so I had to get the other three. They're quite easy to locate thanks to the ingame item library called Access Info. In here you can choose whichever character, weapon or item in the game you're looking for and it will tell you all about that item including where to find them. All the parts for Freyna dropped from open world missions in the Vespers zone so that's where I went.
It took me roughly an hour of running these missions over and over again to get the drops I needed. The first two parts I collected relatively quickly due to the missions being quite short. The last part took me a good 45 minutes to collect due to the missions being much longer. It wasn't the most exciting mission in the world either since we had to escort this drone to a certain location then wait two minutes while it does some scans. There were other people doing the same grind so at least we were as efficient as we could be.
Research takes time
Having spent an hour collecting parts it was now time to go to the research NPC and craft the character itself. This doesn't cost anything besides providing the parts but it takes 16 hours to finish. Yet another system they've taken from Warframe for sure. It's a free-to-play game so they want to time gate these things to get you to spend money on them. Speeding up this research of 16 hours would cost roughly $5.
You can of course just play the game normally and the timer of course counts down even if you're not playing so it's not really an obstacle at all. I got back to the campaign and let the timer sit there doing its thing overnight.
Poison waifu
When I got up this morning the research had finished so the first thing I did when logging in was to go and get her. The first think I noticed after picking her up is that I really love her design. She's a poison fighter and her outfit consists of black leather with green poison elements to it.
I haven't gotten around to trying her out yet so I'm gonna have to come back to how she plays in another post. All I know is that she mostly deals damage over time through her poisons.
