So I progressed through yet another zone in The First Descendant and made it to the next boss I had to defeat to progress further. He's called the Devourer and I ended up defeating this guy a lot faster and easier than I did the Dead Bride. The boss itself isn't really that hard... it's just that other players are complete idiots.
Simple mechanics
This fight is very straightforward. He deals toxic damage so you equip modules and gear with toxic resistance. He's weak electric damage so you equip guns and a descendant that deals electric damage. The game tells you this on the mission select screen yet it seems to be to much for the general populace to understand.
When it comes to in-fight mechanics they are also quite simple. His ranged attacks are slow and easy to dodge. The team killer though comes during his immunity phase where he spawns three bubbles with a thing inside that you have to shoot. As long as this stays up he keeps healing. These are linked to the boss by three long green beams. Should be pretty easy to understand that you need to do something about them. People do not understand that you have to do something about them. Every time this happened the boss was able to heal to full health again and we have a rinse or repeat on our hands.
Solo is the way to go
I attempted this as a team a good few times before deciding to just try it solo. You have the ability to do all activities in the game in private mode if you want to. I defeated the boss on my first attempt after doing this. The bosses scales depending on how many players are in the fight and his health just went down so quick. This made me wonder between two things: I was building my character just right to deal with the boss while other people weren't, or, bosses are just heavily overtuned when playing in a group. The latter is quite possible.
At least this fight has thought me one thing. If these bosses get to hard I just need to try and defeat them solo. It's quite possible I would have been able to defeat the Dead Bride fater if I had known about the scaling before. At least it's something to move forward with.
The First Descendant is still growing on me even after 30 hours in. It's really scratching that looter shooter itch and I can see myself spending a ton of more hours in this. It will be exciting to see how it develops over the next few months.
