Pokémon Unite (2021) review: another successful deviation from the formula.

I am no stranger to the various kinds of experimentation that the Pokémon franchise has entered over time, I already mentioned it briefly in my review of Red Rescue Team where I praised the personality that permeated said game (Although some moments of the gameplay were so rough), I admire that pocket monsters are brought to various genres and feel like they have been the starting point for iconic combinations that have left us quite satisfied as fans.

Talking about Nintendo's foray into the world of mobile gaming is something else, not because it was directly bad but because although it has all the logic in the world, it was unexpected for those who, like me, grew up with a Nintendo that played it much safer with their intellectual properties, to the point of being overly jealous.

The point is that since Pokémon Go the landscape has changed and it is not strange to see franchise games in our app stores, for better or for worse.

Pokémon Unite is the most recent of these deliveries and after leaving absolute exclusivity on Nintendo Switch, it decided to touch our mobile devices timidly and for free.

The result is an online arena multiplayer game that is quite reminiscent on behalf of the likes of League Of Legens (Pardon me if I am wrong, I am ignorant of the entire genre) that can feel quite familiar to those who have already tried titles. of that style in the past but it can't help but overwhelm those who like me are used to much more traditional works.

If Pokémon Go was a simplification of the concepts and general aesthetics of the original RPGs, Unite works as a simple but complete experience in a pretty serious genre of modern gaming.

The mix is ​​adorable, Pokémon Unite is a visually beautiful game, and each graphic and audio piece is built with the feel one would expect from any Nintendo game. From a simple character editor to a fairly complete template of creatures, they are those appetizers that start this new adventure.

To say that it is easy to master would be to lie to them, Unite seems to be simple but a couple of games will prove otherwise, here we cannot be fooled by the sweetness that characterizes the creatures of Game Freak, the strategies to reach victory must be well organized and nothing will be given to us with extreme ease.

Although the losses can be frustrating and they do not feel at all affectionate with newbies like me, it is quite pleasant how the game decides to structure itself before us, leaving aside the tedious micro-payments that could limit our games in very frustrating ways to short and long term.

Pokémon Unite is - at least in its first impressions - a successful experiment, where months of effort and dedication collide in a solid product that raises the bar for what we should expect in mobile gaming. I admit that although it does not align with what I usually like, it is a sample of potential that over time will be properly exploited.

I am totally eager to overcome its learning curve and discover all the good it has to offer.

No soy ajeno a las diversas clases de experimentación a las cuales ha incursionado la franquicia de Pokémon a lo largo del tiempo, ya lo mencionaba brevemente en mi reseña de Red Rescue Team en donde alababa la personalidad que empapaba a dicho juego (Aunque algunos momentos del gameplay fuesen tan toscos), admiro que se lleven a los pocket monsters a varios géneros y siento que han sido el punto de partida para combinaciones icónicas que nos han dejado bastante satisfechos como seguidores.

Hablar de la incursión de Nintendo en el mundo del mobile gaming ya es otra cosa, no porque fuese directamente malo sino porque aunque tenga toda la lógica del mundo era inesperado para aquellos que como yo crecieron con un Nintendo que la jugaba mucho más seguro con sus propiedades intelectuales, a tal punto de ser exageradamente celoso.

La cuestión es que desde Pokémon Go el panorama cambió y no es nada extraño ver en nuestras app stores juegos de la franquicia, para bien o para mal.

Pokémon Unite es la más reciente de estas entregas y tras dejar la exclusividad absoluta en Nintendo Switch decidió tocar nuestros dispositivos móviles tímidamente y de forma gratuita.

El resultado es un juego multijugador de arena en línea que resulta bastante reminiscente a nombre de la talla de League Of Legens (Me perdonan si estoy equivocado, soy un ignorante de todo el género) que puede sentirse bastante familiar para aquellos que ya hayan probado títulos de ese estilo en el pasado pero no puede evitar abrumar a aquellos que como yo están acostumbrados a obras mucho más tradicionales.

Si Pokémon Go era una simplificación de los conceptos y la estética general de los RPG originales, Unite funciona como una experiencia simple pero completa en un género bastante serio del gaming moderno.

La mezcla es adorable, Pokémon Unite es un juego hermoso visualmente y cada pieza gráfica y auditiva está construida con el tacto que uno esperaría de cualquier juego de Nintendo. Desde un sencillo editor de personajes hasta una plantilla de criaturas bastante completa son aquellos aperitivos que dan arranque a esta nueva aventura.

Decir que es fácil de dominar sería mentirles, Unite aparenta ser sencillo pero un par de partidas demostraran lo contrario, aquí no nos podemos engañar por la dulzura que caracteriza a las criaturas de Game Freak, las estrategias para llegar a la victoria deben estar bien organizadas y nada se nos dará con extrema facilidad.

Si bien las derrotas llegan a ser frustrantes y no se sienten para nada cariñosas con los novatos como yo, es bastante grato como el juego decide estructurarse ante nosotros, dejando de lado los tediosos micro-pagos que podrían limitar de formas muy frustrantes nuestras partidas a corto y largo plazo.

Pokémon Unite es - Al menos en sus primeras impresiones - un experimento que triunfa, donde meses de esfuerzo y dedicación coliden en un producto sólido que sube el estándar de lo que debemos esperar en el mobile gaming. Admito que aunque no se alinea con lo que suele gustarme es una muestra de potencial que con el tiempo va a ser aprovechada apropiadamente.

Estoy totalmente ansioso por superar su curva de aprendizaje y descubrir todo lo bueno que tiene para ofrecer.
