I've had this game on my list since 2022. At the beginning I was very interested in it, but for different reasons I put it aside and never found the ideal time to play it. A year later that interest has returned and with a lot of strength, so this time I decided to try it.
The story will put us in the shoes of a mute boy in the 70s. One day, while working in an inn, we will meet a talented con man, who will teach us a couple of card tricks and, seeing that we do well, will ask us to be accomplices in a swindle he intends to carry out that same night in the inn. Not to go into details, the swindle goes wrong and ends with the owner of the inn dead and with us as the only suspect, so we decide to join the con man and travel around the world swindling people.
So, the objective of the game is to collaborate with our con artist friend to make him always win in the card games. However, the complexity will go much further because each con has its own mechanics that we must master, for example; One of the first tricks we will learn will be called drunk eye, it consists of looking at the opponent's cards while we serve him wine and, once we have clear his hand, clean the table in a specific way to indicate to our friend the type of cards that the rival has.
The difficulty of all this lies in the fact that we don't have infinite time, while we perform our tricks we will see the rival's suspicion bar, which will be increasing every second. If we take too long or do something wrong, this bar will fill up and, when it reaches the maximum, the rival will realize that we are cheating, which will end with us in jail and having to try again.
The game is getting more and more challenging, because it will not always be the trick of serving wine, some cons will require a special trick, which often will be three times more complicated or complex than the first, for example; Deal the cards in such a way that our friend always gets the best, cut the deck to ensure an AS, change the deck for a false one and several other things that we will learn throughout the adventure. Many tricks will test our memory and mental agility.
We will have a small map where we will see the available swindles, as well as the minimum bet accepted. Whenever we complete a swindle another one will be unlocked, with a different victim and a new location.
Part of the money earned in the bets will be for our camp, where we live with other people who will teach us some tricks. We can donate the amount we want, but if we talk to the leader, he will tell us how much is the minimum recommended. Taking into account that the money has no use beyond betting it in the card games, it is usual that we always end up donating most of it.
Card Shark is a fun, challenging and extremely original game. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would say that no other game has done something like this or has similar mechanics. When I started playing I was expecting the cheats to be button presses and little else, but I was surprised to see the complexity they give to each one and, above all, how the game goes to great lengths to explain them to you, because whenever we learn a new trick, the game takes the time to explain how it works, detailing each move and the advantages that entails. And although I didn't mention it, I think you can appreciate it in the images, artistically it's a beauty, it has a style that reminds me of old paintings. Highly recommended, especially if you want to try something different.

Llevo desde 2022 con este juego en mi lista. Al principio me interesó mucho, pero por diferentes motivos fui dejándolo de lado y nunca encontré el momento ideal para jugarlo. Un año después ese interés ha regresado y con mucha fuerza, por lo que esta vez decidí probarlo.
La historia nos pondrá en la piel de un chico mudo en la época de los 70. Un día, mientras trabajamos en una posada, conoceremos a un talentoso estafador, el cual nos enseñará un par de trucos de cartas y, viendo que lo hacemos bien, nos pedirá ser cómplices de una estafa que pretende realizar esa misma noche en la posada. Para no entrar en detalles, la estafa sale mal y termina con la dueña de la posada muerta y con nosotros como único sospechoso, por lo que decidimos unirnos al estafador y viajar por diferentes partes del mundo timando a las personas.
Entonces, el objetivo del juego es colaborar con nuestro amigo estafador para hacerlo ganar siempre en las partidas de cartas. Sin embargo, la complejidad irá mucho más allá debido a que cada estafa tiene una mecánica propia que debemos dominar, por ejemplo; Uno de los primeros trucos que aprenderemos se llamará ojo borracho, consiste en mirar las cartas del rival mientras le servimos vino y, una vez tengamos clara su mano, limpiar la mesa de una forma específica para indicarle a nuestro amigo el tipo de cartas que tiene el rival.
La dificultad de todo esto radica en que no tenemos tiempo infinito, mientras realizamos nuestros trucos veremos la barra de sospecha del rival, la cual irá aumentando cada segundo. Si nos tardamos demasiado o hacemos algo mal, esta barra se llenará y, cuando llegue al máximo, el rival se dará cuenta de que estamos haciendo trampa, lo que terminará con nosotros en la cárcel y teniendo que intentarlo nuevamente.
El juego cada vez se va poniendo más desafiante, porque no siempre será el truco de servir vino, algunas estafas requerirán de un truco especial, el cual muchas veces será el triple de rebuscado o complejo que el primero, por ejemplo; Repartir las cartas de tal forma que a nuestro amigo siempre le toque las mejores, cortar la baraja para asegurarle un AS, cambiar la baraja por una falsa y varias cosas más que iremos aprendiendo a lo largo de la aventura. Muchos trucos pondrán a prueba nuestra memoria y agilidad mental.
Tendremos un pequeño mapa donde veremos las estafas disponibles, así como el mínimo de apuesta aceptado. Siempre que completemos una estafa se desbloqueará otra, con una victima distintas y un lugar nuevo.
Parte del dinero ganado en las apuesta será para nuestro campamento, en el que convivimos con otras personas que nos enseñaran algunos trucos. Podremos donar la cantidad que deseemos, pero, si hablamos con el líder, este nos dirá cuanto es lo mínimo recomendado. Teniendo en cuenta que el dinero no tiene un uso más allá de que apostarlo en las partidas de cartas, lo usual es que siempre terminemos donando la mayor parte.
Card Shark es un juego divertido, desafiante y extremadamente original. Quizás me equivoco, pero diría que ningún otro juego ha hecho algo como esto o tiene una mecánica similar. Cuando comencé a jugar me esperaba que las trampas fuesen apretar un botón y poco más, pero me sorprendió ver la complejidad que le dan a cada una y, sobre todo, el cómo se esfuerza el juego en explicártelas, porque siempre que aprendemos un nuevo truco, el juego se toma el tiempo de explicarte cómo funciona, detallándote cada movimiento y las ventajas que eso supone. Y aunque no lo mencioné, creo que puede apreciarse en las imágenes, artísticamente es una belleza, tiene un estilo que me recuerda a las pinturas antiguas. Muy recomendado, sobre todo si quieres probar algo distinto.
