When I am asked about gameplay experiences that stand out for the staging of such a game my first answer is always clear, This War Of Mine has to be on the podium of those nights playing where I ask myself several questions and where I can see heart breaking moments, where you feel like you have to donate to a cause that combats the real situations you have seen first hand thanks to a video game.
The studio 11 bit had released this game in 2014 which was one of those years where I was mostly locked up at home after school so I had plenty of time to be on steam seeing what new releases there were, although it was not here that I met the game but a little later when I saw an article on Kotaku about how This War Of Mine was the most terrifying and realistic war video game ever created.
You're telling me that in the years where shooters are at their peak, improving graphics and gameplay every year, this game is the most realistic with respect to war? was one of the things I was thinking back then with my friends, reading the synopsis of the game aroused my curiosity.
The first thing that differentiates the game from that layer of shooters is that this is a strategy game, where we do not control the soldiers involved in a war, but their survivors as they try to survive each passing day, from the premise the game does something very radical and is to show us the day to day life of a survivor in one of the most unfortunate situations in which the human being can be involved, the war.
And it could be so easy to spoil this simple concept, but in 11bit they had clear that they had to make a hard game, without restrictions and that can say upfront how these people live, I like to see this game as a kind of protest against these conflicts, we started in an area with some scraps of food, water and shelter, at a time where it seems that the war is just beginning with some bombings to the cities.
The initial part of the game is brutal in many ways, the main objective is to survive the war with the tools we have at our disposal, but also the resources that are spent and we will have to organize ourselves along with other survivors to find food, take care of our health and ensure the safety of our shelter.
We will have to take care of us in the day of snipers while we also endure to survive the ambushes of military groups, it is an arduous task as this game also deals with the emotions of our survivors and morale is a factor that is key if we want them to be well to withstand these ambushes.
At night we will have much more mobility to venture into the unknown and we can designate a survivor to go out and look for supplies for our shelter, this is where the strategy may be more than necessary because we can run into other survivors or soldiers with weapons that can leave us very badly wounded.
This game is difficult of that you have no doubt, we can not be a single quiet moment because every day we need new resources and new improvements to last a few more days, I in the time I was playing it I could never reach the ceasefire that this game has after a certain time but it has made me reflect on how lucky we are many that we can live our lives quietly away from these conflicts.
This game made me a Red Cross donor and if that is not a victory I don't know what is, if you are not sensitive to war issues and you have a week I am sure you will have a new perspective playing this game.
