This is a crazy game that requires great reflexes and maybe even a sense of humor.
In the game, you're a hitman that goes to different buildings around town to kill bad people. It has a top-down view much like what grand theft auto was before it went three-dimensional. You don't steal cars though and that's fine, it's all action.
The deaths are unforgiving. You have to complete each floor without getting shot or punched because each hit is instant death and you have to restart the floor. There's no loading though, so it's fine, just instantly back at the start ready to go again. Most annoyance from dying I've learned is the delay back into action.
You don't expect to win the level on the first try. As a bonus, if you kill people fast enough you get chain bonus points. There are also different masks you can wear to get different attributes, like having the door opening on someone kills them, rather than knocking them out, or dogs not attack, or starting with a certain weapon.
Each level is designed to surprise you in one way or another. A common surprise is windows. It looks like you're behind a wall and they can't reach you, but then they shoot through the window and kill you. It's funny. Or hidden dogs that run down the hall and bite you to death.
It's a gorey game. If the graphics were better looking I"d probably be too disgusted to play it. Each time you kill someone you splatter their blood everywhere, or you break their head on the ground.
It's set in 1989 Miami, with the full culture of the cocaine scene amongst an unholy amount of neon signs and lighting, cocktail clubs, and mob-run neighborhoods. This is complete with VHS rental stores and filthy-looking pizza shops. It also has lots of palm trees.
The gameplay mechanics are stellar! Quick and responsive to get you out of any jam if you're fast enough. Sometimes you'll get lucky and that's half the fun. I remember running backward, having the door kill someone, and then trying to pick up a weapon only to accidentally punch another person in time, thus winning the level. Something to the effect of your little sister beating you at Mortal Kombat even though she doesn't know any special moves.
It's a great game when you just want to play a game, not remember where the hell you left off, or having to travel somewhere to progress in a game. Most games that I play require a two-hour session to make any progress or have fun. That is not so for this game. You can load it up and just play one level for 10-20 min and be fine.
