MONOPOLY: The Board Game That Keeps On Giving
Hi Gammers.
Monopoly is the ultimate board game. It’s fun, it can be competitive, and you get to pretend that you’re a rich real estate mogul. So what makes it so great? Monopoly has staying power—the game was first introduced in the 1930s and still remains popular today. In fact, there are plenty of modern board games that have been inspired by Monopoly, but very few have come even close to achieving its level of success. The secret behind Monopoly’s staying power is its ability to adapt to different audiences while still remaining true to its roots. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this board game tick...
The History of Monopoly
Monopoly is a classic board game that was first published in Atlantic City at the Parker Brothers’ boardwalk hotel. It was designed to parody the economic system that had led to the Great Depression, and the first game was sold in 1935 at the peak of the Great Depression. The original versions of the game were sold with properties that reflected their real-world counterparts in Atlantic City, including “Boardwalk”, “Park Place”, and “ Baltic Avenue”. The game was very successful during the Great Depression because it made people forget their economic troubles for a few hours. Later, as Parker Brothers began selling the game internationally, they had to change the properties to reflect the locations where the game was being sold. The company was also sued for copyright infringement by the owners of the game “Roulette”, which had a very similar name and game play.
It’s a Game of Chance
Players of the original version of the game had no control over the outcome. They were at the mercy of a dice roll and the whims of fate. The original game allowed players to roll the dice, move their piece around the board, and land on a property. If a player landed on an unowned property, they got to purchase it for a price determined by the roll of the dice. If they landed on a property they already owned, they were allowed to add another house. The outcome of the game was decided entirely by the roll of the dice. This aspect of the game probably contributed to its popularity during the Great Depression. People loved the feeling of being at the mercy of fate; they enjoyed getting out of their day-to-day economic problems for a few hours.
It’s a Game of Strategy
The second version of the game gave players more control over their fate. Instead of rolling the dice and seeing what happened, players could choose to either roll the dice or decide what to do with their money. They could either roll the dice to see where they landed or they could put the money they received from the bank in the slot marked “Go” and move their token around the board. If a player landed on a property, they could decide whether to buy or not, depending on what price was listed on the property. The addition of a “Go” slot for players to use their money gave them more control over their fate. This allowed players to strategize about when to put their money in the bank and when to use it. It also added a new element of risk to the game.
It’s a Game of Partnership
The third version of the game moved away from the turn-based gameplay and introduced a new element: a third-party partner. The game introduced a new player that sat between two other players and acted as a moderator to the game. This player controlled the bank and made sure that the rules of the game were being followed. This new rule also changed the way that players strategized. Players now had to think about not only their own game but also how their actions would affect the other two players. This changed the entire dynamic of the game, and it added a new layer of strategy that the other versions hadn’t offered.
Putting a bow on it...
These three rules of the game have helped it to stand the test of time. While the game has changed significantly over the years, it has managed to retain its essential fun and charm. The game still allows players to get out of their day-to-day economic troubles for a few hours. The game is still changing, too. There are many different variations of the game, and new versions are being introduced all the time. It’s clear that this game has staying power, and it’s likely to remain popular for many years to come.
So, let's play a game.
