Recompile projects are one of the latest big things in the retro gaming community. They allow for games to be compiled for other platforms using pretty close to native code which is MUCH better than emulation. This means games can be ported and make use of platform specific hardware to improve the experience. Such as being compiled for PCs which means higher resolutions, better sound, etc. Bomberman 64 is one of the latest games to receive a recompilation release.
Out of Left Field
According to Retro Dodo there was no fanfare or promotional work available for Bomberman 64. It just appeared. I have to agree with them, I do not even remember there being an announcement that this was even in the works. Just here it is, done, for the most part, ready to play on PC.
That is awesome. In this day and age of everyone wanting to be first to make an announcement, I must respect a team that can keep a secret like this.
What Recompile Projects Mean
The most common improvement we see with recompile projects is better graphics at a higher resolution and often better sound. Some games have other tweaks but anything beyond visual and audio is rarer and not often improved early on.
Bomberman 64 seems to be no different. The main aspects we see improved are sound and graphics. Though, there is apparently mod support now, though mods are implemented it is not all that clear (I am not a programmer either so take that with a grain of salt).
With a party game like Bomberman 64 I would suspect that we could see more players per round being a future mod, if not already released somewhere. Imagine 50+ Bomberman 64 battles on one screen. It would be hectic and I am here for it.
