If you are not familiar with the Friday the 13th franchise then hit Google for the details. The Cliff’s Notes version is a kid drowned at a Summer Camp, Crystal Lake, due to counselors making out instead of paying attention. Years later the kid has grown up, somehow, and is terrorizing the campgrounds killing counselors. That premise has carried a movie franchise since the early 90s and several official games, as well as many “similar” titles. One release in that game series was on the Nintendo Entertainment System (I am not sure if it predates the computer versions, different games though). Generally panned as a bad game, the NES version was not that hard if you read the manual. If not, then yeah, you probably have better luck surviving at the camp than beating the game.
Slashing on the Go
zeichigames on itch.io has taken on the challenge of bringing Friday the 13th, the NES version specifically, to the Nintendo Game Boy Color. Titled Friday the 13th Revisited, you can now play the dubious game without being tethered to a television (via emulation you could achieve this already, I know).
According to Time Extension, GB Studio was used to create this reasonable facsimile of the NES original.
Improvements Even a Mother Could Love
There are a few improvements made in this fan port. For the full breakdown, check out the itch.io page.
Gameplay has been optimized for the Game Boy Color, you can now trade items between counselors and Jason now has a lifebar so you have an idea of how close he is to defeat.
That last one, that doesn’t mean you win, you just have repelled him, he will be back.
All in all, the improvements look to drastically improve how much fun a casual player can have with Friday the 13th on the go.
What horror movie do you wish got a better game, or a game at all? Let me know in the comments.
