If you do not remember SiN, it was an original First-Person Shooter (FPS) released in 1998 by Ritual Entertainment for PC’s. Using the Quake II engine meant decent compatibility for gamers as well as great graphics. The graphics were aged rather quickly though as this was a hinge year for improved graphics on PC’s. Still, SiN did things other, similar, titles simply did not – such as exit wounds on human looking opponents. There was a story that was conveyed throughout the levels as well via radio transmissions. In engine cut scenes were well done too. SiN was ahead of the curve in many ways.
SiNful Memories
Quake II was quite a versatile game, the underlying engine was very computer friendly. This meant, likely, any game using the Quake II engine should run just fine. Not so with SiN. I figure Ritual Entertainment modified the engine quite a bit because on my computer, that ran Quake II just fine, SiN stuttered every 10 to 15 seconds of gameplay. I was able to alleviate this using Glide Wrappers but had to downgrade the graphics quality.
Still, a great game in my opinion. I loved it. The first time I shot an enemy and he landed in such a way that I could see the damage was a seminal moment. Then there was playing only multiplayer that was amazing, even on a 56k connection.
What is Included
As mentioned already, the original Sin and the expansion pack are included in SiN Reloaded. Graphics will feature HD textures and new models in up to 4K resolution and up to 144 frames per second (FPS), anti-aliasing and many more niceties.
The controls are also allegedly getting updated and “modernized” along with the user interface. My favorite option with HD remasters is the ability to swap between older graphics and modern on the fly – I love that feature and wish it was used more.
Nightdive Studios Steps In
According to Time Extension, Nightdive picked up the rights to SiN in early 2020 and released SiN Gold on GoG.com and Steam.
They recently announced they are working on a full remake using the KEX Engine. Players can expect the original game plus the expansion pack, SiN Wages of Sin in this remaster. While I was a huge fan of SiN back in the day, I missed out on the expansion pack.
