Impossible Mission is one of those iconic games that almost every gamer from the 80s knows. Whether you played on a PC, Atari 7800, NES, etc, you know this franchise – maybe not by name but seeing a screenshot will often suffice in reminding you of a simpler time. It may have taken a few decades but the third game in the franchise is finally here having recently released on the Commodore 64. This is a fitting platform as the C64 played such an instrumental role in the original game being as popular as it was, at least in North America.
Stopping the Evil Scientist Is Tantamount
As with other entries in the Impossible Mission franchise, your goal is to stop the evil scientist, Impossible Mission III (IM3) pits you against your old nemesis, Elvin Atombender again. Is our super spy not as super as we are being led to believe here?
Seriously, fans of hard as nails 2D action games will be right at home with the Impossible Mission franchise. I have not tried this entry yet but based on the footage available, that stiff jumping mechanic is still intact here. You either love it or hate it.
Atombender has built yet another headquarters and embedded himself deep within. Your goal is to defeat various security measures, avoid obstacles, and collect map pieces and codes leading to the evil scientist.
Nostalgia Is Right, This Looks Amazing
Psytronik have definitely done their homework for Impossible Mission III. It shows in their attention to details such as voice samples (over 30), both PAL and NTSC compatibility, animated intro and end sequences, and much more.
As o this writing, the cost for Impossible Mission III on the Commodore 64 is $6.99 on the itch.io page. That is a very affordable price. If you are even a cursory fan of this style of game you need to check out Impossible Mission III.
