Capcom are working on bringing classic 2D Mega Man back and I cannot wait. While I only ever really invested some time into Mega Man 2, it has stuck with me all these years. Mega Man Dual Override is a return to the classic 2D side scrolling style and it looks amazing. They are not going for the fake 8-Bit look or even 16-Bit look. They are going all out with the graphics in a 2D format, and I am here for it.
Update but Don’t Break
I am all for reviving classic series such as Mega Man but only if they just update it, rather than break what worked before. Keeping it 2D is the best format for me, I completely skipped the 3D Mega Man games. I know, put down the pitchforks, I am sure Mega Man Legends and its sequels and spin-offs were fine games, just not for me.
If you watch the reveal trailer, embedded below, you may be able to catch some niceties in the games graphics.
Sure, overall it is very much better looking, animated well, and things blow up nicely. Those are things that 2D action games need.
The few seconds where there is scrolling, watch the level graphics. There is apparently some light 2.5D going on. While not as drastic as what we saw with games like Clockwork Knight 1 and 2 on Sega Saturn, it is nice to see.
We Have a Long Wait
According to the description of the Mega Man Dual Override YouTube video, we will not see this game release until 2027. Over on the website Capcom has up we can expect Mega Man Dual Override to hit the Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and 5, Xbox and Steam.
I am glad they are releasing on PC as well – so many awesome games are console only and I miss out on them.
What was your favorite Mega Man game? Much like Castlevania, the second game was my favorite. Let me know yours in the comments below.
