Fans of franchises, consoles, or video games in general are often at the forefront of new exciting things happening. Take Mortal Kombat II being ported to the 3DO console. A Mortal Kombat game was announced in a gaming publication of the time, I believe it was Mortal Kombat 3 and in Gamefan but I could be wrong (my issues of Gamefan have long since found a new home or I would verify). That has not stopped a fan, 3DO HD on YouTube from taking on the challenge themselves. Even wilder is the progress they have made so far.
Get thoughts of Way of the Warrior or Shadow: War of Succession out of your mind. Mortal Kombat II is coming to claim the throne of digitized fighting game on 3DO.
New Update, More Characters
In this update we get a look at some new characters not shown before. Some characters are shown in both of the newest updates but that is to be expected.
In this update, noted from July 23rd we see;
Jax (New)
Johny Cage
Kitana
Kung Lao (New)
Liu Kang
Reptile (New)
Scorpion
Shang Tsung (New)
In the update from July 12th, we saw;
Baraka
Johny Cage
Kitana (in green)
Liu Kang
Scorpion
So, with this latest update we get a look at four new characters. We have yet to see Raiden, Meleena, and Subzero make an appearance, then we will have seen the full lineup from the game. Well, at least playable characters as there are bosses and special characters not yet shown but surely will be included.
Amazing Progress for a Single Developer
Sure, you could mention a lot of the work has already been done when dealing with a port but that doesn’t diminish the fact that this is still super impressive. The 3DO has a lot of untapped potential and is based on familiar hardware (if you are a Mac developer) which has tons of documentation available.
I am excited in seeing where this goes from here. So far, it has easily captured my attention based on my mom enjoying seeing the fatalities (Jax was her favorite).
