When you think of either Robocop or Terminator you probably think of run and gun action, enemies around every corner, style gaming. If you were a fan of gaming back in 1993/1994 then, yeah, that is exactly what you got on the 16-Bit, and portable platforms of the time (SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy). There were problems with either home version though – the Super Nintendo port was censored quite a bit and the Sega Genesis version featured a slightly letterboxed screen and “off” audio samples. While the Super Nintendo version is a lost cause for fans wanting raw action, the Sega Genesis version just got a bug fix, of sorts, that fixes A LOT of the problems it had.
Dead or Alive, This Game Is Even Better Now
While you do not get to play as the Terminator here, only RoboCop, it is still a fun game. In the sea of licensed seaweed floating up on gamers’ beaches, RoboCop Versus Terminator stood out, even the SNES version, as at least a quality action game (the SNES version missing quite a bit of what made either character fan favorites).
While not quite at the same level as Konami classics like the Contra franchise during the 16-Bit era (32-Bit should be viewed as a gaiden releases of sorts). Those don’t really count for most Contra fans.
Patching into the Mainframe to Fix Things
Let’s see, where to start with improvements and fixes. Obviously the original game was uncensored – enemies fall in viscous messes. The big fix, for me, was the bosses and how they take damage. Now bosses take damage based on a dedicated hit counter. Previously, damage was based on a frame timer – this caused some bosses, depending on your lack of luck, to be flat out impossible to beat.
Next up, voice samples from the Beta version of the game were restored – for whatever reason most, if not all, were removed in the published game. Level 8 is now fully restored and the black bar along the top of the screen has been removed making the game full screen.
There are a few other fixes that are related to audio that most fans will miss but they are there for the hardcore of hardcore RoboCop fans.
