I know there is a story to Doom, but I cannot recite it off the top of my head. Okay with that out of the way, back to Rough Waves a total conversion for Doom that changes everything. Doom probably popularized the idea of modding a game as before it, I do not remember modding games being a thing. Most games were closed so fans could not really do anything to them other than maybe edit starting lives, frequency of powerups, etc. Binary stuff that could be accessed in memory, this is basically how game enhancement devices like Game Genie worked. Changing one game into another game was far beyond those accessories though. Doom did that.
Twisted Metal on Water with Boats
Rough Waves has a shallow (no pun intended) story about keeping the peace on a waterway in the archipelagos. It is just fluffed to explain why you are blasting everything that comes into view. The point is stuff blows up good.
Blasting the bad guys and avoiding their return fire is key to surviving in Rough Waves. Using the islands to your advantage is key. This can add a bit of strategy to how you play this Twisted Metal with boats game.
Graphically Impressive
If you look hard enough you will notice Doom things in the graphics. Islands have flat and straight angles to them, there are no beaches for instance, and the sky edges are clearly visible showing you are in a box.
That doesn’t really matter as the game looks fun as can be and that is what matters.
Your boat is basically a tank on the water, equipped with a turret you can turn to line up the perfect shot. Cutting across the water creates an animated wake but doesn’t disturb the water beyond that – no wake zones everywhere it seems.
This could be due to limitations of the engine, what is here is quite impressive. Rough Waves uses GZDoom to create its levels and challenges. Links available over on the Itch.io game page.
