Take your pick of favorite Robin Hood movie, mine is Men in Tights, and turn on that soundtrack and take on Royal Thief on the Atari 2600. While this is obviously not a licensed Robin Hood game, it does borrow elements from that fable so I am going to run with it. Take control over your brave peasant and perform a one manned assault on the rich king’s castle – he has too much money anyhow, right?
Action Adventuring at Its Best
Considering the hardware limitations, Royal Thief’s developer, Artefacto Games on itch.io, has chosen a 2D side view format which works great on the Atari 2600. I have not played Royal Thief, so any opinions and statements are strictly based on available media (screenshots and gameplay video).
Graphically Royal Thief is basic but clean. More graphical than most Atari 2600 titles that we see. I am not a programmer, so I have no clue how hard Artefacto Games were able to push the hardware here.
Challenges Await
Considering your goal is to take gold from the rich king, you are going to be traversing some dangerous terrain. Guards will wait under bridges for you to pass so they can stab you with their spears. There is a blockade forcing you to keep moving forward as well so don’t take too long to choose your next action.
If you can complete your goal, then you can bring relief to the people of the kingdom.
It is not all that often we get games like Royal Thief, at least on the Atari 2600. With that said, check out the gameplay video Artefacto Games have made available on their itch.io page and see if Royal Thief will bring thievery into your near future.
