If you are a fan of PC gaming and were gaming in the 80s and early 90s then you are likely familiar with point and click adventures. From King’s Quest, Space Quest, Adventures of Willy Beamish, Maniac Mansion, etc, the genre was once top tier and responsible for many classic titles. Over the years point and click adventures fell from grace but thanks to fans, never really truly went away. Sure it disappeared from store shelves but that did not stop publishers from selling directly to fans online. One of the most popular interpreters, for point and click games, SCUMMVM, has just been updated expanding the total number of compatible games.
A Fan Project For Fans
According to Time Extension.com, SCUMMVM began life as an interpreter for LucasFilm games, particularly SCUMM games. SCUMM was the engine that LucasArts used to create their point and click adventures.
Life was good for many fans. Then updates came, adding more compatibility and more fans were happy. With the latest update, numbered 2026.1.0, fans can now enjoy games created for 12 new engines. Engines such as GrimE (powered Grim Fandango) and Sierra’s AGI and SCI interpreters are now supported in SCUMMVM.
Let’s Talk About Games
While the exact number of additional games that are now supported is a nebulous number, TE has a short list of known titles you can enjoy now. For their full list, please visit their website. I am going to pull the ones I am excited for here.
Heart of China
Dark Seed
The Adventures of Willy Beamish
Tex Murphy: Martian Memorandum
The Last Express
There are a few more titles in the Time Extension article that might be on your most wanted list. Again, the full list of newly supported games is not known, estimates put it around 190 to 200 new games now working.
