I just learned about Super Mario Bros Remastered earlier today as I was scrolling on YouTube. It was recently updated to version 1.1 and brings with it a few feature improvements. Super Mario Bros Remastered is a new adventure to play through, as well as a level editor, like that gamers saw in the Super Mario Maker games. There is caveat though, you need an original Super Mario Bros NES ROM file as no copyrighted assets are included in the download.
Go Crazy, Make Impossible Levels
It has been a dream of gamers since the early days to be able to create their own levels. Super Mario Bros was no different, it probably had the most yearning for a level editor. While it would take decades for Nintendo to finally wise up and do just that with the Mario Maker releases, ROM hackers have been doing it for years.
Most of those tools used by ROM hackers are not exactly “user friendly” so still, level editing for Super Mario Bros, and most other games, has been out of reach of most fans. Not anymore. It seems level editing is getting easier and easier as those that can create these things realize fans really want to play too.
Not Just Levels
Super Mario Bros Remastered is more than just placing bricked Mushroom Kingdom denizens (read the manual if you don’t believe me). There are options for resource packs that change the look of the game creating combinations fans could only dream of before.
For the full breakdown of improvements and other features, check out the embedded video above. Most of it would be boring to read about when you can see it in action. One thing I do want to point out is the player trail. Made a jump too hard? Player Trail shows the path so you can better edit that section. Nice touch.
Grab Super Mario Bros Remastered on itch.io but remember, you need a Super Mario Bros NES ROM file too.
