Hello Gamers! How are you doing? I hope you're all doing great. I'm pretty happy because I FINALLY MADE IT TO ACT 2 in Path of Exile. But let me tell you all about it. In my last post, I talked about my journey searching for Merveil in The Siren's Cadence, this final act that represents the end of Act 1. However, on my first attempt, it was impossible for me to find her. I was searching and killing tons of enemies, and yet I couldn't find her anywhere.
Finally, today I found the entrance to the second part of the Cavern of Anger. After exploring Merveil's Island about four times, I managed to find the entrance using the full map that pops up when you press TAB. This made it much easier to navigate the world and find the entrance to the Cavern of Anger, where I could finally enter the second part of the search for Merveil.
Into the Cavern of Anger: Fighting Through the Hive
Upon entering the Cavern of Anger, I ran into a hive. This hive was full of incredibly powerful monsters. Well, all the monsters in this final act are level 12, and the same goes for any hives we encounter—they'll be the same level as the monsters on the map, which means the hordes will be much more difficult, and the "sub-commanders"—these stronger-than-normal monsters with golden names—will tend to appear much more frequently than before.
However, I was able to clear the hive effectively and collect not only more blood for the graft but also level up and get elements for the Genesis Tree to make level 13 womb gifts. So I'll advance more on this later and in another post. However, as I showed in the last post, my tree has been evolving quite well.
After defeating the hive, I kept going deeper into the cave until I finally started finding signs of many pirate corpses and scattered treasures. So I thought Merveil must be close, and sure enough, I managed to reach the door to Merveil's lair. And this is where everything gets difficult.
The Battle with Merveil: A Two-Stage Nightmare
Merveil is incredibly strong, so I had to attack her with all the abilities I possess. Not to mention I died more than once. One of the best things Path of Exile has is that if you die and go to where the boss is, they'll immediately have the same health you left them with, so it's continuing without going back to the beginning, as long as you select to start at the map entrance and not at the town entrance.
The battle with Merveil is divided into two distinct stages. In her first form, she appears human-like with glowing features and wields devastating cold-based attacks. This first phase is tough enough, but you're in for a real surprise when you think you've got her beat.
After I battled for a while, I managed to take her down—or so I thought. By the way, Merveil has a transformation into an enraged siren form that makes her even stronger. This second form, known as Merveil, The Twisted, is absolutely brutal. The transformation is stunning and terrifying at the same time. Her attacks become more aggressive, she creates geysers that deal rapid cold damage, and she summons larvae to overwhelm you. The arena feels smaller, the pressure intensifies, and you realize this is the real fight.
The key to surviving Merveil is understanding her mechanics. Since she deals primarily cold damage, having high cold resistance is crucial. This was something I learned the hard way after my first few deaths. Make sure you've got your cold resistance sorted before attempting this fight, or you're going to have a bad time. Movement is also critical—you need to dodge those ice storms and freezing pulses constantly. Standing still is basically a death sentence.
Once you eliminate her, you have the opportunity to find the entrance to the forest and learn a bit more about her story. The lore reveals that Merveil was once a beautiful woman who became obsessed with the Star of Wraeclast, a gem that ultimately drove her to madness and transformed her into the twisted creature she is now. It's a tragic backstory that adds depth to what could have been just another boss fight.
Entering Act 2: Welcome to the Southern Forest
Entering the forest already marks the beginning of Act 2—in fact, this map appears directly in Act 2. The next thing they ask us to do is find the new camp. The Southern Forest is the first area in Act 2, and the waypoint near the entrance is activated automatically after killing Merveil. This is a nice quality-of-life feature that Path of Exile has—you don't have to search for the first waypoint; it just activates.
The goal at the beginning of Act 2 is simply to reach the Forest Encampment, but don't rush through without paying attention. The Southern Forest introduces you to a whole new set of enemies—Blood Apes, Blood Chieftains who can summon more apes from trees, Bramble Cobras, and various other monsters that are all too happy to murder you. The environment is lush and humid, a stark contrast to the cold, damp caves we just escaped from.
The layout is pretty linear, similar to The Ledge from Act 1, with water on one side and cliffs on the other. This makes navigation relatively straightforward, but don't let your guard down. The monsters here are no joke, and they're all around level 13 or higher. You'll want to make sure your gear is up to snuff and your resistances are decent before pushing too deep.
The Journey So Far: Reflections on Completing Act 1
So, well, finally we've reached Act 2 after several weeks and a new character. It's been a really good journey—entertaining, full of challenges, and lots of learning about the game's mechanics and what's to come. So there's nothing left to do but keep moving forward and find the new camp. With our last mission, we've freed the command from Merveil's torture.
Looking back at Act 1, the progression has been incredible. From washing up on the shores as an exile to defeating a corrupted siren in her underwater lair, the game has consistently ramped up the difficulty and complexity. The skill tree has become more important, the gear checks have become real, and the understanding of game mechanics like resistances and movement has become essential.
Path of Exile doesn't hold your hand, and that's part of what makes it so rewarding. When you finally take down a boss like Merveil after multiple attempts, learning her patterns, adjusting your build, and executing better, it feels earned. This isn't a game where you can just button-mash your way through—you need to think, adapt, and improve.
Essential Tips: Portal Scrolls Are Your Best Friend
By the way, something extremely useful in this game is Portal Scrolls. These items allow you to teleport to town, sell your loot, and return to the same spot on the map where you were, as long as you don't take too long. They're absolutely essential for managing your inventory and staying stocked on supplies.
Portal Scrolls are common currency items that instantly create a portal to your current area's town when used. The game is generous with these—they drop constantly from monsters, chests, and destructible containers. You can also buy them from NPCs for just 3 Scrolls of Wisdom, which are even more common.
Here's the thing about Portal Scrolls that makes them so valuable: you can use them strategically during difficult encounters. Fighting through the Cavern of Anger with a full inventory? Portal out, sell your junk, grab some health potions, and portal back. Low on health flasks in the middle of exploring? Portal to town, refill everything, and return. Players can use Portal Scrolls to go in and out of town to immediately refill flasks and heal to full while in the middle of combat.
The only limitation is in maps, where you typically get six portal uses before the instance closes, but during the Acts, you have much more flexibility. I highly recommend always carrying a stack of Portal Scrolls. They've saved me countless times, especially during boss fights where I needed to restock between attempts.
Later in the game, you can get a Portal skill gem that does the same thing without consuming scrolls, but it has a cast time, whereas Portal Scrolls are instant. Early on, the scrolls are definitely the way to go. So for entering and exiting quickly, they'll be extremely useful.
What's Next: Exploring the Forest Encampment and Beyond
So, well, gamers, we've made it to Act 2! The journey continues, and from what I've heard, Act 2 has its own set of challenges. The Forest Encampment is supposed to have several NPCs offering new quests, including hunting down bandits, dealing with Vaal spirits, and navigating through dense forests and ancient ruins.
The Forest Encampment serves as the hub for Act 2, similar to how Lioneye's Watch was for Act 1. The town is connected to multiple areas including The Southern Forest, The Riverways, and The Old Fields, and features vendors like Yeena for jewelry and gems, and Greust for weapons and armor. This gives us access to better gear and more skill gems to further customize our build.
One thing I'm really looking forward to is continuing to develop my character. The passive skill tree in Path of Exile is massive—like, genuinely overwhelming when you first look at it. There are hundreds of nodes, and planning out your path requires understanding what kind of build you want to create. Do you focus on life? Energy shield? Damage? Critical strikes? Elemental damage or physical? The choices are endless, and that's what makes Path of Exile so deep.
I've been focusing on survivability and consistent damage output, which has served me well through Act 1. But Act 2 is going to require me to refine this further. The monsters hit harder, have more health, and come in larger groups. I'll need to make sure my resistances are capped—especially cold resistance after that Merveil fight—and that I'm dealing enough damage to clear efficiently.
Final Thoughts: Onward to Act 2
So, well gamers, we've conquered Act 1, defeated Merveil in her twisted lair, and stepped into the Southern Forest of Act 2. The journey in Path of Exile continues to get more challenging and more rewarding. I'm excited to see what the Forest Encampment has in store, what new monsters I'll face, and how my character will continue to evolve.
If you're playing Path of Exile or thinking about starting, my advice is simple: don't give up when things get tough. Learn the mechanics, invest in your defenses, and always—ALWAYS—carry Portal Scrolls. The game has a steep learning curve, but once it clicks, it's one of the most rewarding ARPGs out there.
I'll be continuing this adventure and documenting my progress through Act 2 and beyond. There are bandit camps to raid, Vaal ruins to explore, and countless more bosses to defeat. The Forest Encampment is just the beginning of what promises to be another incredible chapter in this dark, unforgiving world.
So hey, gamers, I hope you enjoyed this post about finally defeating Merveil and entering Act 2! The journey continues, and I can't wait to share more. See you in the next post, where we'll dive deeper into the mysteries of the Forest Encampment and whatever challenges lie ahead. Until then, keep grinding, keep improving, and most importantly, keep those Portal Scrolls handy!
