Hello friends,
Today I thought it might be interesting to give you a tour of one of my very favorite Commander decks: Daretti's Junkyard! I have a case of about 10 Commander decks I consider 'finished' and this is one of the absolute most fun to play. While new Magic the Gathering cards are always coming out I'm no longer interested in buying any modern cards so, to complete these decks, I pulled my favorite cards from the first 25 years of Magics history to make something that feels perfect to me.
Fun is the goal here, not power, that said: This deck can do absolutely disgusting things in the right hands. Let's start by meeting Daretti:
Big D is the perfect Commander for this deck as everything he does is perfectly on plan. This deck wants pour gas all over itself, sew chaos, turn trash to treasure, and create a board state that is untenable for opponents while beating them down with major threats.
There is so much to love here. The main game enders are the four threats on the top row that create more and more tokens in various ways. Obviously these spells are FAR too expensive to cast so we're going to be cheating them out. To do that we're going to need ways to fill our graveyard...
Gas! Gas! Gas! Any deck that runs a Wheel of Fortune is a good deck as far as I'm concerned. One has to be careful when using fortune type effects as they can assist your opponent but, well, being careful isn't really reds thing.
The biggest problem this deck has is that it's very fair. It seeks to win by bashing your enemy down to 0 health and, at it's core, is a mono-red combo deck. If this deck is EVER going to be able to win it's going to need some of the most oppressive and unfair cards red has access to. Double points for cards that support the Artifact theme by creating Treasure!
One of my favorite ways to help a deck feel complete is to include in it's box a complete set of the tokens the deck can normally create in nice Dragon Shield sleeves. I only Dragon Shields. This makes the deck feel nearly like a board game as everything you need is right there in the box. I've found this is also super helpful for folks playing this deck for the first time, which is what my 10 deck box is designed for.
Thank you for taking a look around with me. It would be my pleasure to answer any questions you may have. If you would be interested in more content of this type please follow this account and let me know!
