Germany is finally starting to warm up. But due to some rainy days and a workshop I hosted outside of the city I live in, I haven't visited the garden for one week. I miss it! Instead I'm maintaining the balcony time by time.
Around this time of year, in my area, very affordable leafy green seedlings for salads sandwiches and more are sold at DIY stores and local markets. One costs around 30 cents 👏 Surprisingly the price stays the same since I started planting them.
If you plant them on your balcony, you can harvest the outer leaves little by little and enjoy them all the way into early summer if you are living in cooler climate like me.
For us, two adults and one child, 12 plants is the minimum. While they’re growing, I casually harvest a few leaves for sandwiches or lunch boxes. By their peak in May, there’s enough to make proper salads. If we plant around 15–20, we can almost completely cover our salad needs without buying greens ... although I need some more spaces to do so.
Planting may take time but not much effort is needed afterwards. It’s simply convenient to step out to the balcony from the kitchen and pick some whenever I feel like having fresh greens. They give leaves on Sunday too and for free 😉
I've planted 12 seedlings already and will see I can plant more ore not. First I have to transplant some strawberries to the garden. We planted them for the memory of my mother who passed away in this season and always bought strawberries for my daughter when we were back in Japan. The strawberries grow well and need more space.
I’m looking forward to going to the garden the day after tomorrow and for Easter holidays to do egg hunt with my family.
Happy gardening, everyone!
