They have been living with us on the farm from the very beginning and take an important part in improving soil life throughout.
processing most our kitchen scraps, passing it through their intestines, enriching it with beneficial gut bacteria and turning it into highly prized humus with amazing water retention capacity, which will occasionally be mixed in with soil for its improvement.
a very simple and cheap setup allows us to keep these worms happy and productive all year round. in winter they migrate deeper into the humus to keep away from the cold while in summer all they need is slight humidity levels and shade.
any excess liquid in the tub ("tea") drains into the bucket below and is used in watering of trees and other plants across the farm. it can be diluted in water for larger capacity but is never too concentrated for direct watering, without dilution.
about once a year, the humus is harvested for use and the colony restarts from scratch on a base of cardboard and food scraps.
thank you for stopping by 🙏
wishing us all a peaceful week
