What do mini trains, water balloons, gelato, bunnies and red berries have in common? They are all part the growing farm to fork experience. In recent years there has been a growing trend, internationally, to give families an authentic farm experience. When I was introduced to the "berry picking" concept I was first living in the USA and then the UK. It seemed a bit strange to be paying to pick my own fruit. But the novelty certainly has its appeal once you have enjoyed your first farm picking. Many farming communities have opened up to the public and offer a growing number of unique experiences. A petting zoo or farm stall being the most well known. Many farms here in the Cape offer an off-grid getaway where you can pick your own fruit and be a part of the farm life for a day. Or two.
Red Berry Farm is on the beautiful coast of the Western Cape. It is a wonderful experience for the entire family. Although we live on a homestead and understand all the responsibilities of farm life, we still loved the experience. Apart from the obvious - berry picking - the big attraction for small children .... and .... ummmmm .... some bigger children .... is the mini train.
Opened to the public in 2000, Red Berry farm was initially a dairy farm. Two decades later and it is a very popular tourist destination - as well as perfect for school outings.
In the summer heat we enjoyed their artisan ice-creams but on the menu is a very extensive menu including strawberry cocktails!
There is a huge maze for those who like the challenge. As well as a 5km run. The pathways around the farm are truly beautiful - although it is extremely crowded; being frequented by huge crowds.
The petting zoo and big play area was filled with the happy squeals of children. Both are close to the open restaurant area so perfect for families.
While my small children splashed in fountains a big attraction is the water balloons. The queues were long and strawberry gelato held more allure.
It has been quite a while since I could enjoy such a unique #marketfriday. But I imagine that and I would spend hours wandering the floral pathways and sampling the various artisan ice-creams under the beautiful trees of Red Berry farm. Ah, if only it were that simple Denise?
The strawberry season is over but there is always a reason to visit such a lovely farm. A happy weekend to all of you busy bees reading this - no matter where you are in the world, or what your plans and reality is.
Edit: all photos my own except the credit for the gelato and mini train to Red Berry themselves
