This isn't a new idea. Since forever space have been a gardeners headache in town. From there the green wall or plant wall idea. Plant more plants in the same ground space by going up.
A lot of beautiful systems were developed from hanging bags through pots that stack and clip together. If you can think of it, someone propably already made something like it.
Plants however aren't fussy. If it's a container with soil and drainage most plants will grow in it. I grew up with plants being cultivated in coffee tins and the like. You don't really have to buy an expensive system to test an idea.
To test the green wall idea I borrowed this idea from someone who developed growing systems for vegetables in the Sahara. He simply took plastic soda bottles cut off the bottom. Then leaving on the cap, drilled a hole about an inch and a half from the cap.
He then put in sand and stacked them top into the open bottom forming a pole. In each bottle he cut a little window for the plant.
The water drains through the holes into the next bottle. Because the is closed the space between the cap and the holes creates a little reservoir that kept the plant from drying out.
I tried my own vertion. I took the picture after stacking together the bottles to see how many I need for my tower. I simply tied it to a pole using wire.
After a few months it looks much better.
This is a cheap and easy way to test the idea of having a green wall in your garden. You can adapt it to any type of plant that will fit into a pot. It even adapts to succulents.
Water and drainage can be controlled by changing the diameter of the holes and the size of the reservoir below it.
It is easy to adapt your own variation.
I appreciate your support.
