In my garden I have a lot of little tomato plants poking out their heads in pots and other places where the seeds landed by accident. That is what I like about my garden. A lot of plants arrives by accident at the start of the season. I even have some squashes poking out their heads.
I decided to replant some of them. Somehow I feel sorry for the little guys, they deserve space to grow.
I decided to put them where they can climb.
The bucket I put them in is the anchor for an upright holding up something else. If I remember I'll tell you more about that sometime. Here they will have space to spread and go up as far as they want.
The bucket holds its own secret though.
Back when I had a big garden I did very little with it, believing I could not afford the water. Water is a bit expensive around here. So, mostly due to a lack of creativity, some splendid opportunities went to waste.
Trying to prevent history from repeating itself, I did a bit of research. I came across something called Hügelkultur. Don't know if I spelled that right. What Hügelkultur basically is, is packing wood under your beds to reduce watering and keep the soil warm in winter. Did I get that right?
I modified my growing medium a little.
In the bucket I put some oak branches I cut.
The wood going in the bottom soaks up water like a sponge. It holds enough moisture to keep the plants going when I forget to water for a day or two. It also helps with cutting down the water consumption of the garden.
Whenever I can bigger pots and planters gets the same treatment. A good idea, don't you think.
Now I get to plant in my tiny garden without having to worry about water bills. No worries about going away for a day or two also.
So now you know one more of my secrets. Thank you for reading my post. Your upvotes and shares are truly appreciated. And special thank you to for a very beautiful tomato.
