The cleanup day turned into a cleanup weekend. I spent most of the weekend starting Friday afternoon and going till Monday cleaning up my tiny garden.
The pictures gives you a better idea of what I pulled up when you compare it to the ones in my previous post.
When the chaos cleared, I found some things and plants I forgot I had. An ornamental strawberry took hold under the plants in one corner. A glass fishbowl I forgot I had made an appearance. I will have decide what to do with some of the forgotten plants into the garden.
The cleanup also had an opportunity to kill off pests. Snails is the biggest vermin in my garden. Cleaning up revealed their hiding places. I counted as I exterminated. At 200 I stopped counting. Now I understand how the snails could eat a whole tomato in less than a day.
While I cleaned up I started thinking about what should be added to increase the food production. What I add will mostly be what I can get at the moment so drawing up plans beforehand seems like slightly wasted effort.
I will sit down and do a basic layout. Everything will be planted in pots though. The property is a rental so when I get to move I take my garden with.
With all of the thinking I added small item, a valuable feature. I took an empty glass bowl and my re-found fishbowl and made two small water features.
I simply filled both items with water and floated some Egyptian salad on top. Is that even the right name for that plant? Then I placed it in two spots where it would be shaded most of the day.
I love water features. This small addition is not about water features though. A healthy garden has an abundance of insects. Especially the ones that keep the pests under control. Insects needs water.
I floated the water plants on the water so insects and especially butterflies can have a safe perch when they want to drink. I am unable to tend the garden every day, so natural pest control seems to be a good measure.
The only other addition I did while cleaning up is to plant some climbing beans. Hopefully after month end I will be able to plant more. It will be seven or eight days before I get to my garden again. Even more before the next post.
