In our backyard, we are blessed to have our own small farm garden where different kinds of vegetables grow. Some of the vegetables that we currently have are Okra, chili, sponge gourd, Bitter gourd, eggplant, bottle gourd and many more. This backyard garden is not only a source of food but also a source of exercise and joy. Every day, working in the garden allows me to sweat, stretch and move around which is a simple way of staying active and healthy.
Most of the time, I am the one who takes care of the plants. Sometimes, when my husband is not too busy with work, he also helps me with planting. Watering or harvesting. But usually, I am the one in charge of our Backyard Garden. Our purpose for this garden is mainly for our own consumption. It also gives me the chance to share vegetables with my parents and in-laws, which helps them save money and of course gives them fresh and healthy food. Since most of the, are seniors, it is important that the food they eat is natural and nutritious.
There are also times when I get too busy with work and cannot give all my attention to the plants. However, I always make sure that they get watered and that I add organic fertilizer whenever possible. I believe that even small efforts in gardening can make a big difference.
One of the vegetables I planted is bottle gourd. Unfortunately, it did not grow very well because I planted it near some fruit trees. The trees block the sunlight, so the plant became thin and weak.
My Okra are growing well. They are from the seeds of the okra I preciously planted. Okra is an easy vegetable to grow and I am happy to see them growing.
My bitter gourd plants are still small, but they already have a few tiny fruits. I find it exciting to see the first sign of harvest. Every little growth in the garden feels like an achievement.
Aside from vegetables, I also grow herbs. One of my favorites is oregano. This herb is very helpful in our home because I use it to make syrup whenever someone in the family especially my child is not feeling well. Oregano is a natural remedy that has been a big help to us.
Every morning, I harvest vegetables directly from our garden. The taste of cooking with fresh and homegrown vegetables is truly different. There is a satisfaction and happiness when we eat what we have grown with our own hands. Not only is it healthy but also it saves money and gives us peace of mind knowing that no harmful chemical is used.
Gardening may require time, patience and effort, but the benefits it brings to the family’s health and happiness are priceless. May backyard farm may be small but it gives us so much. This is my owned picture, edited in Canva.
