Across the wildflower area, late afternoon
Wednesday was to be a nice day. While I waited for it to warm up, I cleaned up the mess I’d made of the bills/budget and got that done. I cleaned up the kitchen.
There was a good amount of leaves down again so I planned to get them mowed up. I decided to rake them out from the gardens and edges this time.
The little catalpa had finally dropped all its big leaves. They are hard to mow up as they get very deep. So I raked as many as I could over the bank.
I got this New East garden cleaned out and all around the Small garden.
As I was doing this area, I was thinking I’d have my helper friend cut down or pull out all the dead tall stuff in the various gardens. Those cleome on the left are prime targets.
Just about all the leaves are off the white oak, so soon we will be able to pull the tarps off the Small garden. I must ask Tom to see if he can repair the pressure washer. The tarps haven’t been washed and put away in a few years and should be done this year.
The magnolia had dropped all its leaves and they made a tough leathery deep pile to clean up.
But now, one can see how many buds it has for next year.
So I started the mowing in the backyard and ran out of gas about halfway through. I had a very little left in the can but managed to get all the rest of the mowing done and the rider back to the barn.
Looking across the New Herb late afternoon, I realized almost all the color is gone from it.
Only Row 5’s calendula has color now.
I went down to check out the Little Trees row. The Juneberry on the end had a lot of new branches this year. The peach tree is just losing its leaves now. The comfrey stayed much smaller this year, due to the drought no doubt. All the elderberries are bare. It’s getting to be time to put the protectors on the tree trunks for the winter.
While I was mowing, my son finally got started on the wood area’s raking. He got it half done.
The West of Steps garden is still pretty, but the East of Steps not quite so much.
The last bad frost got the marigolds in the New West garden finally.
But right in front of the marigolds, on the walkway, the thyme is still flowering.
I finished the mowing around 3PM and ate a late lunch. Then I spent the afternoon reading. I got Vol. 2 & 3 of “West Along the River” from the library. This is the series I’d found on my last outing. For some reason, in my search Vol. 1 didn’t appear. It turns out it was available and the library woman dropped it by on Wednesday evening. I’d already finished Vol. 2 and am halfway through Vol. 3, the biggest of the 3.
Hopefully there won’t be anything exciting to write about on Thursday as I’m having a simple procedure done. And hopefully I will be up and around on Friday when my helper friend comes.
