New West garden – wood hyacinths, white Iris, giant allium, columbine
On Friday morning I wasn’t moving too well, too much food I should not eat on Thursday. It causes pain and makes my brain fuzzy. And it ruins my sleep, but self inflicted, so I soldier on.
I managed to get my post up and the milk order done before my helper friend arrived at 8AM.
We collected our equipment and headed out to the Big garden. The goal was to get 2 rows of Walla onions planted and mulched. As we’d moved a ton of mulch last time we were in the garden, it went quicker this time.
We had over an hour left so we got the row of Lacinato kale in too and mulched. We still had room left but no time so we cleaned up and quit.
I looked over the see how the rhubarb was doing but couldn’t see it for the horseradish and its flowers.
So I walked around the garden to see. I took the mulch off on May 1st so it’s been just over 2 weeks. I think it’s doing pretty well, considering.
This is how much of the garden we’ve done so far, half way.
The next large area is for tomatoes and peppers. There are 5 short rows, 2 of which are for artichokes. They will be quick to do. We just have to prep and mulch to tomato/pepper area as I won’t put them out until June 1. Finishing this area will make the garden ⅔ done. Hopefully we can do it all on Tuesday.
The peas are doing well but they need a little weeding. The middle row has a lot of cleome seedlings at the end.
On our break we sat under the trees and the apple blossoms slowly drifted down in the breeze. There were a few left on the tree as I came around the south end of the Big garden.
I always grow a few extra just in case, and my helper friend went home with the Walla onions and some Lacinato kale.
Once inside, I got the windows opened on the first floor and got a shower. The humidity is back (my wrists are sticking to the table as I try to type) and that really takes it out of me.
After I sat for a while, it was nice with the breeze and low temperature, but I decided I was just too tired to try to do a flowerbed.
When my youngest brother got home, he said he’d been talking with my oldest brother and the oldest had found someone to work on the tractor. It would run into thousands of $$ but we can’t be without the tractor. Tom’s little Kubota just can’t do the heavy stuff the Ford can. So we are waiting for an estimate and then they will come get the tractor.

It’s to be a warm muggy night, so I will have the screen door on the bedroom for the first time. On Saturday once it dries out, I plan to get the mowing done. It’s gotten bad again between events and rain and now it’s 10 days since the last mowing. But I don’t have to mow at the barn, so only 3 hours I hope.
