On Wednesday morning I was up around 6AM and got my post up. I finished folding the laundry. By 8AM the thermometer was nearly at 50F and the sun had come out so I decided to try to get the West Shed garden done before PT.
So I managed to get out there by 9:15AM and set to work. I had my special gloves and had dressed warmly and hoped I’d be fine. But the invasive weed that took over this garden last year has long tap roots and I had to dig each one out. In ½ hour my hands were frozen. The garden was thawed, but hadn’t warmed up.
So I quit just before 10AM and got cleaned up and my photos taken.
This is how much the snow had melted from the day before.
I’m still not going to be able to do these gardens for a while. The forecast is cold temperatures in the 40’s tops until the end of the month. Sigh…
In my wanderings I went over to see how much snow was in the cold frame and found these. I’d forgotten to clean it out last year! And some were still alive!
We are back in a drought again, though not as bad as the eastern part of the state.
“Although Massachusetts received up to three feet of snow in February, that snowfall has not yet helped improve drought conditions. Most of that water is still locked in snow because February temperatures stayed well below freezing; the ground was also frozen. Even when it melts, the three feet of snow equals only about two and a half inches of water, which is not enough to fully recharge rivers, lakes, ponds, and groundwater after months of below-average precipitation and overall substantial water deficits.
“This drought has been building since 2024, and we’re still seeing the effects in low streamflow and lower water levels across the state,” said EEA Secretary Tepper.”
Once inside, I just sat and warmed up then got ready to go to PT at noon. Once back from there, I sat for a while and was just falling asleep when the contractor arrived to work on the window trim boards.
I sat for a few minutes to wake up then got up to thin seedlings. Once that was done, and I’d seen how tall they were, I remembered what had said about putting a small fan blowing on them to strengthen the stems. So I got one of my fans and set it up.
Then I went and got a load of dishes in the dishwasher and headed down to the workshop to see how it was going. I hadn’t been able to visit with him when he was here last. So we got caught up on things.
Once he left at 6:45PM, I got some supper and sat down to watch ‘The Miniver Story’. I had to get up at 7:30PM to pull shades and get the fires going. It had been very warm inside all day so I had waited. It was supposed to drop into the 30’s during the night and only be in the 40’s and cloudy on Thursday so I’d need the heat.
I finished the movie just after 9PM and finally got to bed just before 10PM.
On Thursday I have to get the laundry put away, clean up the kitchen, tend to some odds and ends, tend stoves, and get ready for my #4 helper. She will have errands and shopping to do and then I guess we’ll start another project, maybe spring cleaning my bedroom. We’ll see…
